While browsing Thingiverse to find interesting things to make, I came across a bunch of ,stl projects for air gun pellets. I found one particular one that I think has promise, it's .22 cal and has a divot to hold a bb at the head. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5619008 I have printed 26 pellets for testing, in PETG. The steel BB snaps into a printed in socket in the head, and I could feel it give a little then slurp the BB into the head, so it will stay put, I'm sure.
I only have my kitchen scale but I know it's pretty good, and I measured the weight at 7.7 gr per pellet.
The nominal dimension is 5.55 mm dia at the head (I haven't measured the prints) and 8.6 mm long in the body, The BB sticks out just less than half, so 2mm or so. It has a small blind hole in the skirt.
In .22 cal it's rather light, so I expect some pretty high numbers on the chronograph. I am planning to use them for plinking at 10 yds, which is my basement range, and also a test of the concept. These will probably be useless in a PAL gun, but maybe OK for the under 500 fps rifles I have. Also, pistols - like my 22xx, 13xx, Bandit etc which may also shoot them OK.
The testing will have to wait for a while because I'm busy with other things, but I'm excited to see what these will do.

Those 3D printers are so cool, I didn't think they could print so small and accurate.

I have all the respect for folks who luv to tinker. Well done and am looking forward to the results!

Hi Duke.

That seems interesting, keep us posted.

Do they have another .stl file for .177?

Interesting indeed, Duke. Have at it.
Any idea on the cost?
Depending on the 'catching' material, they might be re-usable.

Estimating 0.3 g of plastic including scrap and skirt during printing, I could get 3300 pellets out of a 1 kg roll of PETG which costs roughly $25. 6000 Daisy BB are listed on Amazon for $22. t took about 30 mins to print 26 pellet cups, and the printer is rated at 600 W power consumption, so half a kW spent say $0.10 for 26 pellets. Doing some math, a printed pellets would cost about $0.015 in materials only, no tax. Thats about $7.50 for a tin of 500. Given that PA often sells their .22 cal Grizzly pellets (at least they used to before the pandemic) for about $8/500 the economy of this exercise is in doubt for .22 cal. :( :drinkers:

[emoji38] However I believe making 1000 pellets will be a very boring job that you won't want to make the 1001st pellet... :D

Would that make a 3D printer, a large capacity magazine? LOL

I think Dukemeister needs to consider SLA printing. Resins have come a long way in the last few years.

Interesting, maybe you should try to design a sabot pellet that actually discards the sabot and see what kind of velocity you can get.

Today I printed myself some mods for my center point scope yea it cheap but I made it a whole lot better I printed adjustable turrets so no more removing caps to adjust elevation/windage I also was able to print a front blade sight that slips over my crown protector to give me a "iron" sight for close ranges. I have a m4 style flipping peep sights front and back but no rails up front to put it on I tried printing a barrel raile basically a rail that just clamps into the barrel but it's a little too high to light up my rear sight I haven't test how accurate it is yet but I'm hoping it's high if anything I can shave it down a pic I'll post the pics of them when I get home but anyone have some cool idea or mods for 3d printing I'm even down hell I might start selling parts locally if anyone is interested I currently only have petg on hand and only black but I got like 3 kg of it
