This is a very helpful thread. I have encountered problems like this several times and noticed that some mounts fit some guns but not others.
Some mounts end up with a cant and I have just assumed that it was because I tend to buy cheap mounts - but sometimes the more expensive ones have been the problem.
Understanding that there are intentional differences is a big help.
I have previously just accepted that the mounts are off, but rotated the scope tube back to level.
Thanks everyone for pitching in on this one.

Oh~ yeah, I remember one set of mount I used I actually rotated one ring 180 degrees and it works well then...

But a higher priced one usually do have better quality.. I have a set of Hawke mounts for my PS and the Airmax scope. The mounts use bigger screws on the bottom for mounting on the rail and normal screws on the rings which I love this design. And last time I took it off to try another scope then afterwards I put the whole set (mouns and scope) back on and no POI changes... Which I was thinking I need to slightly re zero it but actually I didn't need to...

So it sounds like this particular style of UTG mount was made messed up. Too bad the shimming didn't help.

I have a couple of unused NIB Leapers/UTG mounts that I won't use. I had three sets and tried one. These are the mounts designed for 9.5mm(3/8") to 11.5mm grooves. They will work on either size but with 11mm the scope is slightly to one side of the bore center. The claw on the mount can be reversed to accommodate either widths and hold tight. Unfortunately, the recoil pin is not in the center when used on 11mm dovetail. I should put them up for sale since someone might have 3/8" (9.5mm) dovetails.

My calibrated eyeball tells me that both the dovetail and mount are 60 deg. angles, not 45 deg.... In addition, it looks like the moveable leg of the clamp on the ring is too thick and blunt at the point.... I would file some of the bottom off that moveable clamping leg to sharpen it and lower that side of the ring....

Update, no amount of shimming is going to make these sit evenly.

I remember having this very same problem with a set of cheapo rings, I shimmed underneath the fixed jaw and it solved the problem. HTH.

Fixed.
I carefully ground 0.45 mm off the bottoms, and now they sit nice and straight.
They are actually pretty nice mounts when all is said and done, so they were wort saving.
The may go in my bits and bobs bin, I'm not not sure what scope will end up on this soon to be carbine.
I don't know how a machinist would do the grinding, but I have access to metallurgical equipment so
I approached it from that angle. The legs were mounted bevel side down in a bakelite puck, the type used for microstructural observation. This gives a large flat surface you can lay flat and grind, usually just a small amount, but I went aggressive and removed 0.45 mm. Then I broke them out of the pucks, dry fit and once satisfied they would work, they were de-greased and cold blued.

I've mounted many scopes like this, crooked. As long as both mounts are aligned you'll be fine... especially on a PCP.

Doubt shim will fix it, the dovetail and claw have different angles.
