"Why does the Challenger 2 still have a 120mm rifled cannon instead of a smoothbore cannon? Everyone else stopped using them decades ago.
I have a friend who was a tank gunner. The 120mm rifled gun in the hands of a top gunner is very very accurate. He won a lot of beer off US tank crews in shooting competitions on joint exercises. He reckoned at 3Km he could accurately put a shell into a 2ft diameter target every time.

Practice rounds do not explode so you can see the point of impact. 5 shells all within the 2 ft diameter target is good shooting."

That's 0.0116 degrees = 0.696 minutes of angle, or 0.696" at 100 yards, if my calculations are correct.

3,000 meters is a good poke. Amazing accuracy - and 120MM to boot - Hoora.

Smooth bore allow a much wider variety of ammunition such as sabot rounds.
