My journey into the ‘snow peak’ airguns began last year, thanks to Wes. So I wanted something for my pre teen boys to shoot in the back yard, that wasn’t department store garbage. After breaking a few crosman products, it was time for something better. So I took the step and bought an Artemis CR600w from Wes ( airgunarcheryfun.ca). So after close to a year of proving the quality, I thought it was time for me to have my own backyard plinker as the AT44 is about 15 years old and was not so backyard friendly, more city slickers moving to the small towns these days.

Well roughly one month ago, I order a Diana Stormrider (.177) that was ‘Lane’ regulated. At first sight I was impressed with its fit and finish. But being from the big ‘CH’ I was hoping it wasn’t one of those lemons that pop up in modern manufacturing. It held air, the action functioned properly and smoothly, time to prepare it for action.

Started with a good ole cleaning and re-lubrication:

After about 20 patches pulled threw the barrel, I finally achieved a clean barrel. These guns are definitely ‘shelf stable’ for many years as they are better preserved better then NASA’s original moon landing technology. Lol

I wasn’t going to dig to deep into this air rifle until needed or till it’s been proven a winner, just in case. Oh it was a winner.

First groups:

I put about every pellet I had threw this rifle that I had (12-14types) and the groups weren’t great but did not scare me, as I know these rifles can be polished up.

JSB 8.44 (4.52&4.53) 5/8-3/4” @30yds
JSB 10.34 (4.52) 5/8”@30yds
Crosman 10.5 1/2-5/8”@30yds

And the list goes on, needless to say this is ‘out of the box’ performance without any major checks on the rifle beside a clean barrel. Owning the CR600W, I’ve learned about their minor barrel issues.

After leading the barrel, it was time for a basic strip, to make sure all things that should be tight, were tight. This is truly the part of the airgun addiction I love.

What I noticed during my basic strip down.

First I noticed the adjustment screw on the trigger vibrating loose. After inspection I felt the thread clearances were a little sloppy, but nothing a little tephlon plumbers tape can make up for. And that’s when I noticed the screw were too short anyway and wouldn’t make any difference anyway.

Barrel clamp was a hair loose, but the barrel fit was tight. Barrel to receive grub screws were tight, action to stock fit was excellent. So I polished the crown to a shine and re-blued it. So I borrowed the second barrel band from CR600W just to prove the accuracy would improve to some extent. And like the CR600 it did, so I knew sleeving this barrel would be the ticket.

Just after I ordered the PR900 from Wes, I also ordered a short length of 16*12mm carbon Fiber tubing as I wasn’t a huge fan the second barrel band look. So back to the tool bench for the first semi deeper strip down.

I removed the stocks barrel band and removed the over hanging part, shorting the dovetail length to make both face square as I was fitting the CF tubing between the receiver and barrel band then a second length from the barrel band to the muzzlebreak. I was hoping to bore out the barrel band to 16mm but there just wasn’t enough material in its design. 2 piece sleeve is how it had to be. Once a dry fit was done and all fit nicely, I reassembled the rifle. Knowing the barrel was only locked into the receiver with 3 grub screws on the top, I knew to take ‘tensioning’ the barrel slowly using the threaded muzzlebreak.

With my finger crossed I took it back to my range and started test using only crosman 10.5 and JSB 10.34 pellets. I didn’t want to be stuck to any pellet weight below 10.34 as this backyard plinker will be used for rodent control as well. So I’m going to skip the the pellet results as it no longer liked pellets it preferred before the sleeve job. At first the crosman 10.5 were the winner with a 3/8-1/2 group shooting semi supported ( primos tri-pod sticks) with JSB coming darn close. So I gave the muzzlebreak a 1/16” rotation and my dreams were answered. Now my favourite JSB-10.34 are shooting 1/4-3/8” groups all day @620fps. Which also gave me over 100 shots per fill with hardly much bark from the rifle. This now blows my AT44 out of the water as to 30yd accuracy.

To achieve the 620fps with a shortened hammer spring, I made two 0.025” shims and placed them between the spring and spring guide. I noticed my pellets had a spiral flight using the original hammer spring setup, so I thought maybe a hair more speed may help. Boy did I hit the nail on the head on the first swing.

Has posting a picture gotten easier over the past 13-15 years? I remember the days of using photo bucket and that wasn’t all that easy then. I’m even more computer ‘not-friendly’ these days. Lol

This biological hard-drive of mine has limited space and technology isn’t my thing. If anyone has an extra copy of ‘picture posting for idiots on CAF’, I’d love a copy. Lol

Just recently I decided to try something with the trigger. I removed both adjustment screws from the trigger blade and removed the trigger blade from the trigger group. I then threaded one screw into the bottom of the blade, the hole nearest the inner curve of the trigger. I then sanded the screws head down till the slot for the driver was gone. I then stoned the screw to have very minor spherical shape. Then reinstalled the blade into the gun. The trigger seems to have a lot less travel and feels a bit heavy but it breaks nice enough for me to achieve descent groups at 30yds. I personally feel the trigger is the weak spot on these budget rifles. But with trial and error, things can be improved.

I learned from adjusting the trigger on my cr600w too much adjustment can also affect the safety mechanism as well. I’m not sure if the slight angle change in the trigger, increases the distance between the trigger and safety bolt. But it can possible ruin your safeties function. Keep that in mind, safety first always….

The stock:

Very light weight, beech wood stock. The gripped areas have more look then feel but again this is an entry level PCP. The grip feels short as well but still gets the job done for me. And the stock is shorter from the trigger to the fore end, then most similar style rifles. The fit and finish is remarkable at this price point. The ‘length of Pull’ feels a shorter but does the trick for short or tall shooters.
