It took almost a week, but I can shoot it again!

It started like this:

Now looks like this:

Finally she's usable again. Not as dark as I would like it, but guns are made for shooting not massaging...

Thanks YepYep for all the advice.

As per YepYep's advice ...

Tung Oil

Edit: Here's how I did it for those, like myself, who may have never done something like this to one of their babies ...

Clean the wood and remove wax if any.

Liberal application of oil at the start. I used a sponge. Let dry for an hour and rub off excess oil with a dry cloth.

While applying the coat, feel free to use some fine sand paper on the wet finish. I started with 320 and worked my way up to 1000 grit near the end.

Always rub off all excess oils with a cloth, not a napkin, and you can do multiple coats a day, just give it a few hours in between.

Once you've done enough for the day, let it dry for 24 hours and start again. Use finer and finer grit as you go along, and eventually, it won't take much oil at all.

The finish you see is 6 coats. Each coat involves saturating the wood with oil and a bit of sanding.

My first time ever! Thanks again YepYep

Thanks again. Glad I asked, since there was potential for me really messing it up with stain and lacquer.

Very thankful to have listened to you.

LOL~ You are very welcome! I am glad to see you do have success in this project and love the result~

Stain and lacquer is another way and used by manufactures too... However if you love it and want to make it your own special piece, I would still like to use the old school time consuming method to oil it... I tried different wood treatments and settled down with this by learning from others in the forum too~

... and the wisdom is appreciated. Rushed is great for a factory, but old school, time consuming methods are fine for one's assets.

Teak and Tung oil finish is where it's at for prized gun stocks and grips.

For everything else, sure, stain and lacquer. Did it with a coffee table. Takes a single day, not a week. I don't grip the coffee table in my hands however, it's for my feet at most. Savage I know.
