First ever shots at pistol targets.
Shooting with the FAS 6004 w/ambidextrous grip.
Sight not dialed in. Just aiming at the 7 in the 6'oclock position.
Dialed it down to 5m to increase the odds of not missing the entire trap.
First time with the target box. Thought it would be bigger!!! Much bigger! .. hence 5m.
Still sorting out my dominant hand/eye.
Shot 5 to 10 shots at each target until it felt like time to change.
Punched 9 paper targets and did not miss the trap, but the forum allows 3 pics and you guys don't care about some newb's accuracy at 5m.

Here's the right hand with right eye:

Here's the left hand with left eye (picture is rotated for some reason .. but target was properly oriented during practice):

Here's both hands:

Conclusion:
- There is no Olympic gold in my future .. but ...
- I didn't miss the box. (YAY!)
- My right eye is dominant and sharper, but my left hand is more stable. (DOH!!!)
- 5m is fine for now.
- Practicing with the right hand (without shooting) because all I had was the PP20 right hander has made me more comfortable shooting with the right even though the left hand is dominant.
- Session got better as I kept on shooting.
- Still not shooting well enough to adjust the sights. I'm all over the place.
- All the noise in my head just fades away and I'm at peace when shooting. Feels meditative.
- It's fun. Love it.

... and lastly .. I'm awful and that's ok.

:)

Nice shooting~ (Yeah~ that's very encouraging~ :) ) You have fun and peace of mind and relaxed... That's very important~ :)

And looks I think you may use a cushion or pads or pillow under the wrist as a support and use a table or chair as a platform then use your most comfortable hold to zero the sight first.

And then you remove the supports one by one and seek the reason of why it shoot to left or why it shoot to right... Because in 5m away, your 6004 shouldn't shoot like a shotgun. So try to let the gun rest itself in your hand/hands and no need to force the gun and your groups should be tightened up then...

Thanks for the encouragement. Just wanted to share my very humble first experience, none of it is impressive by any stretch and obviously not going to bombard the forum with my paper targets.

If you would have told me that hole punching was going to be my favorite pastime, I would have laughed, although ... those hole punches at school always seemed pretty cool and fun to me. Something about those nice clean punched holes. ;)

Also if a dude with astigmatism and neurological damage can avoid missing the target at 5m, anybody can do it.

Anybody can do it. So much fun.

EDIT: Thanks again YepYep. Yes I'll get a rest of sorts, nothing fancy, but will try to adjust the sights and work out what happens as the support gets changed up from rest, to two hands, to one.

Second reply!!

.. it's related to your (@YepYep) advice about the grip.

Yeah the home exercises performed in the past were related to how you hold and what you do with a Glock in police situations since my cool new BB gun was a Glock 19 replica from Umarex. Went wild with that thing. Bought a bunch of clips and barrel extension parts of sorts from all around the world.
So you probably know that it's best to hold that Glock with a grip that pivots mainly with your second finger .. the others just add to the confusion so they must be a supporting cast only.
Compress from chest and present and shoot at a previously acquired target using muscle memory and confidence.

Hey .. newb here! Don't roast.

Well that's the summary anyways, yours truly is still a complete starter newb still romanticized by the hobby of air pistols in a way.

In my humble experience, a bit of romanticism, a.k.a dopamine chase when it pertains to a constructive hobby like physics, knitting, hunting or target shooting helps the individual excel without ego. When you remove the ego from a pursuit, passion is left.

LOL~ I can see that~ and don't worry about losing yourself~ You have bold characters~ :)

And a target pistol is not a semi-auto action pistol... They have their characters too... They are built precisely and IMO you are not shooting them but helping them to shoot the target... They are primary and the shooter is secondary... A good quality target gun is always more accurate than the shooter... So you need to find a way to cooperate with it but not control it. Just my 2 cents.... Because I am not a good shooter either~ :)

Not a bad result. My goals at first was keeping them all in the black. That eases a lot of self pressure to score. In the end it's the same anyways. You just miss smaller.

btw there is a phone app that will score the card for you. It's called targetscan. It's gone up in price since I've first started using it but works well. Many good features and useful reports.

Targetscan is 26.99$ .. worth it.

Will check it out. Thank you!

Installed it just now. Tried to read the Gamo targets purchased from Amazon. Targetscan knows these as "Gamo 10 m air rifle." At least it recognizes them, but not sure if pistol vs rifle rules are different.

Certainly not ISSF targets.

What do you use @jckstrthmghty as your targets?

Remember you said the target ia soooo small~ and at the time I was wondering wondering if the one you have is a rifle target... But on your pictures I couldn't tell... Of course I am not the professional at this field at all...

I remember the rifle target is not easy to use for pistols... Looks you are challenging level 10 at the very beginning?! [emoji38]

Keep it up, irate. You did just fine for the first time on targets & I dare say, better than many.
Shooting handguns is very difficult to start with and made even more so without good instruction.
Bravo!

The only matching target in the the app is gamo 10m air rifle, not pistol, otherwise the app just won't scan the target. It's the target pack that came with the Gamo target box .. but you can't buy refills!

Looked on Amazon for issf 10m target packs for the 5.5"x5.5" target box .. nothing.

The other targets I have are "Pop Resin 100 pack targets for Gamo Cone Trap" ... and there is no matching target in the app at all and so the app will not scan at all.

Weird.

Thanks for the encouragement. Totally appreciated. Yes it's very challenging and clear that to graduate from "not missing the box" at 5m to "confident 1 inch groups" at 10m, there are months if not years of practice and thousands of reps to go.

Each journey starts with a single step... mine is "don't miss the box @ 5m" and "zero your sight!". :)

EDIT: Also, with some cheap flip-up optical aids like a shade and an iris/aperture, things might get better.

First thing's first is getting a compatible pistol target for the 5.5"x5.5" cone box that the TargetScan app can work with.

Ok I get it. Those probably won't fit the 5.5" x 5.5" box I'm using (??)

Here are the targets I'm using (first ever session with the TargetScan app)... The targets that "work" are the "Gamo 10m air rifle".

Did a left hand, right hand and two handed card of 5 shots each.

Day 2.

The targets I have are 70mmx70mm. I don't think you would have a hard time figuring out how to hang them. I use a clipboard clip but tape of any kind works too. My target box is just a couple of pine boards screwed together with duct seal on the back. Picture with an official 10m airgun target.
