Quite the character. LOL

I never knew heat treating was done with an oven? I made a few center punch where I heated the tip red hot then cooled in oil. Proceeded to heat red hot again but stayed back an inch then watched the heat travel till the tip was blue then cooled again in oil. cleaned buffed and worked out not too bad.

Dude has skills but maybe should have left that rifle alone? :axe:

Been watching the guy for many of years. Despite his self skill assessment he's quite a good and knowledgeable machinist. I'll give it watch later tonight.

The 'tempering', ie: drawing of the hardness down to the proper level is more easily done with an oven. My bro
uses a toaster oven for this work, whether on springs or flintlock frizzons. The 'soak' time is very important when using an oven
like this. Time is required to get THAT temperature completely through the item. If tempering using a torch, the effect is much
faster, but of course, trickier and the part needs to be perfectly polished to "see" the correct colour. Most springs are done to
straw but a little more to dark blue is OK. A flint lock's frizzon needs to be slightly harder than a spring, to spark well.

Yeah I guess an oven is easier if the temp. can be achieved. Most ovens can only reach 550 or so. Not sure if the temp. would be sufficient to temper?

Likely need a potters kiln? My guess 1,500 degrees? Steel melts at 2,500

That guy in the video never tempered anything!

A 1 hour "soak" at 475F will temper a lock's frizzon perfectly. I think it's about the same for a spring.(I think that temp is correct)
Tempering is drawing the hardness back from brittle. Bright red to orange is used for hardening. Then,
before the glass hard item is dropped to shatter on the floor, it needs to be tempered.
Some steels harden and get tempered at different temperatures as well as in different media, like water,
oil, some use old motor oil, some use new, some use veggie oil, etc, etc. Different strokes for different
folks.
