In 1973, the three most powerful breakbarrel spring airguns in .177 were
-Weihrauch HW35 @ 710 fps
-BSF S70 @ 760 fps
-Feinwerkbau 124 @ 783 fps
Velocities quoted are from the Air Rifle Headquarters 1973 catalogue using Lion Jet or H&N pellets.
I sold my HW35.
I still have my BSF S70 and FWB 124D.
All of them are capable of punching holes through 1" pine boards.
None of them are capable of punching holes through a 2" x 4".

Grab the softest piece of spruce 2X4 I can find in the work shop.
Using JSB Exacts in .177cal and .22cal. Five shot average at various spots on the 2X4. Measured using paper clip into the back of the pellet and the impact surface.

Here are the results:
0.177cal JSB Exacts at 820fps - 5 shot average penetration of 0.366", range from 0.271" to 0.511".
0.22cal JSB Exacts at 740fps - 5 shot average penetration of 0.396", range from 0.352" to 0.418".

I guess JSB Exacts are not very good at penetrating wood.

I think he is probably telling the truth but it's just a matter of finding out which slavia it was. He's not a very big airgun addict like me so he didn't know the velocity but he was shooting with it from about 50-80 yards when target practicing, and he said at that range as soon as he pulled the trigger the pellet was there. So I assume it must have been doing something in the 1000fps range and higher.

Here's some of my results from earlier:

Diana 48 .177 doing 950fps=0.87"
HW90 .177 doing 1015fps=0.93"
Diana 48 .22 doing 785fps=0.70"
Diana 34 .22 doing 622fps=0.50"

JSB Exacts 4.52 and 5.52 were the pellets used, and no they are not good at penatrating wood. But they sure do work well on pests and tin cans.

It was plus 4'c today and I just got back from a plinking session with the .22 48 and .177 HW90. I have a peep on the 90 and from 30yds I printed a 1" group on a leaf that was on the ground standing upright. The 90 seems to be most accurate right around the 900fps mark. And the 48 is amazing even with the stock irons, I set up food cans that measure 3" across the bottom. I push them into the dirt pile I use as my backstop so I am shooting at the bottom of the cans. Once I got it sighted in at 30yds, I went out to 70yds and turned the elevation wheel 4 clicks and aimed at the middle of the can, couldn't miss. All my shooting was done off hand as usuall, and the ammo of course was JSB Exacts. These pellets are unbeatable in most of my guns, only a few have different preferences. So whether they penatrate well in wood or not is not important to me, what is important to me is that they fly true.

So none of your springers are getting through a 2x4 though? Then I wonder what my buddy is talking about. Because he has told me about this great slavia he had more than once. And each time he inlcuded that it would go through a 2x4 with ease. Hey guys I have another buddy who owns a Falke model 80 which is a pretty old under cocker springer you then ones where you pull the lever down instead of out and that thing must be a doing a good 750 if not 800fps.

Hi Mulby,

Did you use a dry spruce 2x4 for testing penetration?
Do you have any 7.9gr Crosman Premiers? If so, maybe you could try a couple of shots from your HW90 at point blank on the spruce.

I guess we all realize that woods can have different densities and using wood is not always the best idea... but it's fun and maybe it's all we have. :D

Thanks,
Todd

All I can think of that would explain what your buddy is telling you is that he was shooting the same spot on the 2x4 a few times and eventually blasting through it. I'd like to do the same 2x4 test again with Copperhead Pointed pellets and see what kind of results I get with them. Unfortunately, my supply of them is quite low and they are not important enough to make a special trip to Cantire just for them. They would likely penetrate further, but I still can't see them going through, at least not easily.

Well usually spruce 2x4's don't differ very much in hardness or softness. At the moment I only have one break barrel air rifle which is an RM422 .22 cal and the best I ever got it to do with a stronger spring and superlube was it making it halfway through a 2x4 from 15 feet with a meisterkugeln 14gr RWS wadcutter. And a quarter of the way from 30 feet. With my modded 1377c it will make it half way through from 20 feet on the same board and a quarter of the way through from 60. My other airguns don't come quite as close as my RM422 or 1377c.

Well I will talk to him again one of these days and ask him how many times he had to shoot it to get the pellet through. If he says once then I don't know what to say. other than find out the exact gun he had and try it out for myself.

Hi Todd,

The 2x4 I used was dry, sat in my shop for at least 6 months. Sorry, I have no Premiers, the closest thing I have are Copperhead points and limmited supply at that. Even if I did have Premiers, I would have to jack the power back up in my 90 again since I like shooting it best at 900fps and as soon as I was finished the test I brought the power back down to that level again. I still don't have a gauge, only the pump, so when I get the gauge I will juice it right up to max BAR and maybe try the test with Baracuda's, or if someone would send me a few Premiers in the mail I could try them. I'd buy the Premiers myself, but I can't justify spending all that money on pellets that I can't surely rely on. The JSB's have been so dependable, more than dependable really.

I have some old style .22cal Crosman pointed, the ones with good BC. These are the best penetrating pellets that I have used.

Here is the results at 740fps: 0.557" average of three shots, measured with a paper clip probe on the same piece of wood as before. That is 0.205" better than the JSB Exacts. 8) So pellet shape and material help in wood penetration quite a bit here.

But still no making it straight through a 2x4. Like I said in my above post the best I can get from a springer is with my power modded RM422 .22 cal getting half way through a 2x4 at 15 feet. When I go to the gun show tomorrow I will look for a good powerful springer and if it's a good price I will buy it and compare it to my RM422.

. i have a .22cal at 1250f/s with 14.5gr pellets that wont go through a 2x4 with any pellets . it will with .22 slugs . but no pellets i have will make it through . and i'm talking about a pressure treated 2''x4'' which is about 1.75'' x 3.5'' . i have 29gr pellets .14.5 gr pellets . pointed /round and flats. i also have a .177cal . 860f/s and will never come close to going through .
the 29gr only travle 970f/s , on some 2x4 it wil split the back open but not go clean through.
(2x4 is what i put at the end of my chrony to stop the pellets .3feet from my muzzel)
a real 2x4 ? i will not evn come close with any lead pellets ,unless ... nope .
i think your friend was shooting 2x4 mm bords

Well I guess we'll never know unless I can find out the exact Slavia he had and buy it from a gunshow or something.

Hey you guys probably remember this thread. Well I did finally get a hold of a Slavia 620 and that is definately what my buddy had. I did some tests with and from 15 feet it it will sink "7/16" in a 2x4 using a crosman pointed pellet. From 6-8 feet it will get halfway through. So if he was getting all the way through with his 620 in ones shot it must have been pretty damn souped up.
