Just saw this on CBC... not good for our airgunning community. Those Chinese AK's that were brought in are now illegal; apparantly they can be converted back to a 7.62 too easily.
Here's the story: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/201 ... -rcmp.html

Hey....they forgot to mention our forum by name!! How rude...

Terrible exposure for the airgun community.

Does anyone think it strange that these items have been imported for over a year but the national story only appears just before the vote to eliminate the long gun registry?

This is ridiculous, saying you can "easily" convert a BB AK into a firearm AK is like saying you can "easily" convert some sheetmetal into one. How do you get a bullet thru the barrel? How do you fire the bullet? How do you even get the bullets... you need a PAL to buy ammo, how could people buy this crap posing as a article? Whatever happened to informing people?
I try to explain the differences to everyone who shows the smallest of interest either positive or negative in airguns, I never treat them as toys but they should be treated as firearms either.

The Government tried to pull the same nonsense here in the U.S. with an airsoft look alike of the AR-15.

Finally enough knowledgeable people made themselves heard that they quit the effort. I think maybe the stock could have been used and that was about it.

What a bunch of crap. If criminals wanted an AK receiver, they can buy the flats in the USA for 10.00 at gun shows. Why would they spend 300.00 on a bb gun.

I was regretting selling mine, but now I think I sold it just in time.

There is alot of finger-pointing going on here. I might suggest that North Sylva (the importer) trying to blame the CBSA for allowing them across the border is a bad argument- North Sylva, more than anyone, should be well aware that if the CFC has not classified the gun and assigned an FRT number calling it a "non-firearm" before importing it, they are simply gambling that there won't be a problem.

Beyond that- the whole situation is a bit superfluous- a BB gun being converted to a full-auto firearm shooting actual bullets is not "simple", and if someone were to take the time/had the skills required to do so- they would be better off building one from the ground-up than attempting the extensive reconstruction required to do it to a chinese BB rifle. I might add such a conversion is far more difficult than a "barrel and bolt"- and would also need a proper loading mechanism, magazine and ejector setup.

Of course, it is always possible that if someone were to raise the power of the gun to above 500fps/4.2fpe they would then have a "prohibited firearm" by legal definition- shooting BBs, and this may be all the law is looking for at this point.

It seems to me that Canadian firearm laws are so messy that the RCMP gets also messed up from time to time with their interpretation. These Chinese BB guns shoot at about 400fps as clearly demonstrated in one of the Michael Kaye’s videos on You Tube (now removed). Ditto they meet all the classifications of air guns according to Sec. 84(3)(d) of the Criminal Code because their muzzle velocities do not exceed 152.4m/s (500fps) (or 5.7J muzzle energy). However, I guess that the RCMP is again looking for a pretext to remove something they don’t like from the market. They did it before reclassifying the harmless flare guns Zoraki 914/925/R1 as “prohibited firearms”. Now we have a world curiosity that handguns that do not shoot any bullets are “firearms” in Canada! I absolutely agree with all who said that converting those harmless BB air guns to a 7.62 mm (!) firearm is next to impossible. Perhaps the RCMP will get back to their senses although I doubt it. They only way get rid of this “reclassification” nonsense is to reform the Canadian firearm laws and regulations. Strangely enough the RCMP is circumventing the parliamentary process which at least requires OIC (Order in Council) for reclassification to my best understanding.

so it would NOT be classified as a firearm .

A BB of 5.1 grains going at 501 feet per second will have a muzzle energy of 2.84 foot-pounds .
A BB of 5.1 grains going at 608 feet per second will have a muzzle energy of 4.18 foot pounds .

I've read through the official RCMP policy on airguns the other day and it seems that replica guns are illegal. Am I wrong? Can I expect the RCMP to show up at my house tonight to take me away in handcuffs?

In regards to the media reports; no matter what the subject often it appears that the writer/reporter of the story is either ignorant of the facts or embellishes them to fit the story. Sensationalize the story to sell papers.

As for my plumbing being used to make a firearm....that could easily lead to a plumbing registry next
