Post subject:  Are there air pistols with decent power that aren't loud?

Ahoy,

So I've been shooting my HW45 .177 in a basement that I'm currently renting. All is good; I've set up a safe enclosure and backstop to ensure there's no possibility of damaging walls, and the gun is enormous fun. I've probably put 80-100 pellets in so far. However, there are other tenants on an upper floor. I decided it was best to shoot when they were out and about, to leave no chance of them hearing any suspicious popping (dieseling) sounds. So I was thinking.. why not trade in for or obtain a new quieter pistol that I'd be able to shoot whenever I wanted. I'd like to ask you folks for recommendations of what you think would be best. I do not want any rifles or CO2 guns. I love springers but I'd guess those are out of the question too due to noise.

Non-PAL only please.

Cheers

I think You picked the loudest gun of the bunch.
May I suggest for economy, a Beeman P17, cheap, you won't have to sell the 45, a real fun gun.
If You aren't on a budget, the maybe a HW40, which is the original German version of the 17,
or maybe an Alecto. If you really prefer a Springer, You should check out the Indian.

I thought that was a rule here. If you're into pistols you have to have at least one Beeman P17. If rifles are your thing you have to have at least one Daisy 953. 8)

Thank you for the quick response. I've actually researched SSP pistols extensively in the beginning, as that was my initial choice of an airgun. I can probably squeeze in one more good air pistol in my budget for the sake of it. Are SSPs also the quietest? Do you know how HW40 compares to HW75 noise wise? Any other good quality high-ish end airguns out there?
Thanks again!

I don't have any experience with either the Beeman P17 or the HW45, but I do with the Alecto.
The Alecto .22 is quite loud at 3 pumps but that would be overkill for indoor shooting. I'm sure one pump would be enough for indoor and it would be fairly quiet.
As a plus, the Alecto is very accurate. A cheaper option would be the Crosman 1322 (1377), but I suspect 5-6 pumps to compare to the Alecto single pump.

The quietest air pistol I've had the chance to play with, was a FWB 65 :D

Too bad that you have ruled out rifles and Co2 air guns.

My 1077 is amazingly quiet - so much so that when I first got it and fired it I was sure that it had not worked...only to find out that it not only was working properly and had put the .177 pellet right on target; but that it was nice and powerful (pretty darn close to the 500 fps level)...

BTW - it is also very very lightweight and very easy to hold it and shoot it for a long time.

This is the U.S. one (same as the Canadian one; just that ours has been detuned):

This is what annoys me about the blanket prohibition on silencers. There are reasons why people might want to keep an otherwise legal gun quiet without thinking anything vile or sinister...

Preaching to the choir.

Personally I think an argument could be made that suppressors for non-PAL guns are not prohibited (for the Criminal Code sections prohibiting firearm suppressors a non-PAL gun isn't considered a firearm, so a suppressor for one isn't prohibited), but I wouldn't want to risk the legal fees or the penalty if found guilty.

Just an opinion but, I think the suppressors are a prohibited device in their own right, regardless of what they are connected to.
I'm sure someone here will have a better understanding of the law in regards to this.

You're right, of course; many arguments can be made to change several of our ridiculous firearm laws, but the law will still be the law until we have a lobby group in Canada that is equal in power to that of the NRA in the United States.

And Stihtech is also right: The device itself is prohibited.

Gotta love the liberals (lower case, of course).

I am personally not a fan of gas cartridges, and I don't have the right place to store air rifles.

Right now I'm deciding between HW40 and Alecto. The Alecto seems more appealing to me with its specifications, but I've learned to trust Weihrauch quality, and haven't heard anything yet on Alecto's durability.

EDIT: Does anyone know where I would be able to buy Webley Alecto? Seems that the gun has amazing reviews.

I can't say much about the Alecto other than a few posts about them failing and all but impossible to get them fixed or buy parts.Or maybe it's only the complaints I hear, but it's one big reason I haven't bought one.
The P17 is an HW40 clone as you probably know, and it's very well done and very cheap. So I'd suggest you try one and see what you think, plus as lleader mentioned it's a rule so kinda have to get one or you're not cool and other peer pressure statements... I have two of them now and may even get another if I ever have time to mod and/or destroy the others. I also have some tuning info for it.
Springers like the 45 sound very different than the P17, the 17 sounds like a CO2 gun, virtually silent mechanically but gives a loud pop from the muzzle. The pop can imo be heard thru walls more than the 45. The 45 can also be tuned to be quieter, but a 500fps 177 version is either already quieter than a normal or it may be louder depending on how they altered it. So tuning/modding it properly can reduce the sound a noticeable amt or a ton.
So either way I believe the 45 is the least likely to be heard. If you want the quietest then I suppose you'd need to break down and get a rifle, I haven't detuned a springer rifle all the way down to 500fps, but I have one about 3x the power that's pretty quiet. If brought down to 500 I rekon it would be much quieter and be insanely easy to cock, like easily with your pinky.
The P17 would be perfect with a suppressor, but since you can't have one then I suppose I would make a box with stuffing in it to shoot thru to catch the noise. I'm picturing a box of say 12-18" square and 18-24" long with a tube of chicken wire or simlar thru the center long ways making 3" or so hole. Then stuff it with old towels, clothes, open cell foam, fiberglass insulation or whatever. I've done similar and it works. Optionally I suppose some sound dampening foam would be ideal, which I guess you could make a tube or tunnel shape from it, or even just shoot over a sheet of it.

The quietest pistol I've ever used was the Daisy 747, which is an SSP. It was also very very accurate.

Compared to my other springers and CO2 pistols, the 747 was like a mouse sneezing. :)

....I would have to agree on the 747.....quiet and so accurate it can be boring (really!)...
