Post subject:  Has anyone imported a new air rifle from Germany?

I want an air rifle but none of the Canadian stores have what I want (Weirauch HW77K .22 Laminate Stock). I don't have a PAL license and need less than 495 FPS.

There is a dealer in Germany who has what I want, but their gun is not rated in FPS. Instead, it has the "F" in a pentagon and is under 7.5 joules. (without giving an exact measurement so I'm not sure if it's 7.5 joules or perhaps less)

According to the RCMP website, the guns need to be less than 5.7 joules.

I can't get a FPS measurement from the store all they know is that it's less than 7.5 joules.

Any thoughts on how this would go if I bought it with regards to Canada Customs? I spoke with an RCMP technician today and he didn't think there would be a problem, assuming it was 5.7 joules but was concerned that the spread from 5.7 joules to 7.5 joules would push it over the threshold and cause a problem for me. He was very helpful but couldn't provide any type of confirmation.

Thanks
James

At 500 feet per second a typical 14 grain 0.22 pellet will give around 8 joules of energy, but without knowing the exact weight used for measurement it's not possible to determine the maximum velocity.

Calgary_dude, get your PAL problem solved! If I can score 100% then the course must be quite easy.

It should be 125 m/s equalling 7.5 joules in .22 caliber. For .177 they are about 170 m/s equalling 7.5 joules and would be PAL rated in Canada.
Good luck finding a courier to ship anything that looks like a gun, if you do keep us posted :drinkers:

DHL is good one, I had deliveries from Germany to my door with my archery stuff.
Btw, the online airgun calculator is giving 7.77 foot-pounds from a 500 fps 14 grain pellets, that equals to 10.5 Joules...is this correct?

DHL is good, I've ordered gun parts from Germany and had it shipped DHL. I'm sure they would if there was import permits and such. Retailers do it one way or another.

To answer the OP question, I have tried but was not able. I decided to leave it for retail importers and look else where.

Your measurement is correct. The German 'F' airguns in 22 caliber are all based around 410 fps (125 m/s). For example, a 14 grainer at 410 fps is 5.2 ft-lbs of energy = 7 joules. Makes sense to me, if a gun shoots a heavy pellet slow or and light pellet fast, the amount of energy output shouldn't vary by much. The .177 'F' guns go over both criteria in Canadian law.

Didn't mean to sound condescending earlier, if there is a courier that ships airguns without permits at an affordable rate from Germany to Canada, I wouldn't mind to know
Cheers,

Thanks for the replies. Looks like this retailer ships via DHL. I'm just deciding if it's worth the risk to ship it over and have an issue at the border due to confusion with the "F" pentagon rating and 7.5 joules.

Why not contact D&L Airguns to ask if they will make a special product order to include with their next shipment from Weihrauch? Unfortunately, it might be several months before you have the rifle.

I thought an import license was required to bring any new firearm into Canada.

The prices are good, especially once you remove the 19% VAT Tax. I would really like to support a local Canadian seller, but they are not ordering new rifles until spring with a fall 2018 delivery date. My wife accuses me of being impatient for many things and she's probably right, but I just can't wait 1 year to get something I want when it's available for less money elsewhere.
