A lot has been said and discussed on this forum and reviews on the internet are generally very favorable. So can one assume that for a small investment the chances are VERY good to get a trouble free P17 without the need to do maintenance for some time except for early O ring replacements? My concern is receiving a lemon right out of the box and having to pay for return shipping to an online dealer which may redirect me to a warranty source thus increasing the original cost of owning this much highly regarded budget clone of the HW40?
My understanding is that some owners have had a 'love-hate' relationship with their P17.

I've had a few over the years, from when they first came out by Marksman, as well as the Beeman. None of them ever gave any trouble. The usual oring replacement is the only thing I've had to do.

Great gun for the money, everyone should have at least one.

Thanks for offer Scot- no need to borrow. I'm sure it functions as well as I my aging HW40 which is still fine but thinking of P17 as a low cost replacement. If I buy, will test for a day to ensure all ok and tuck it away.

There have been some reports of a tiny burr/roughness around the air intake hole of the cylinder that results in premature wear on the oring on the piston. Easily smoothed out with some fine sandpaper.
Mine was smooth but it's worth checking if you decide to buy, and you can also check the lubrication on the cylinder oring while you have it open.

I see that AGS is out of stock now and Canada Shooting Supply new price $45.00 down from $54.00 a few months ago.
Wondering if both sources are depleting the P17.

Hi ten ring, I followed Yep Yep advice on the one that I got about 3 weeks ago. There is a YouTube video on how to polish out the rough spots before you use it so you don’t destroy the orings. It is a pretty nice shooting gun. I have maybe a hundred pellets through it with no problems. By the way, my apologies about the crossborder shopping thread. I did get a surprise invoice from UPS that made it not as good a deal as I thought.

The extra charge sure takes the thrill out of a US purchase

And it proved again the UPS just the worst carrier ever ~ always surprises ~

I will refuse any 'good' deal if the seller use UPS...

Especially ground shipping. Apparently air shipment is much less charges but I've found ups horrible for brokerage fees ground!

Would you mind sharing the link to the YouTube video, Crosshair? Sounds like one worth watching!

I think that’s a pretty good deal from Canada Shooting Supply. I may need to get another......you know, just for backup, can never have too many.

Hi wesb2007, I will see if I can find the YouTube video. All I did was a search for repairs to Beeman P-17.

It's not that complicated~

Open the fake slide ( your cocking lever)

loose a bit ( no need to take it out) the small set screw of the pivot pin for the piston rod on the top

Push out the pivot pin (a little punch with rubber hammer and a stick may need, but it won't be too tight, I can just push out mine )

And you can pull the piston out by holding the rod... The end of the piston is the main seal.

Just check everything with your finger tip for any burr, any sharp edges....

Of course, clean and relube just easy and why not do it together?!Image

Here's a pix of how I do the problem hole that tears up the O-ring.
Also a pix of the piston face shimmed up to bump power a bit. Basically they usually don't hit the end of the stroke so that air never gets into the chamber, similar to how 13xx guns are. I used two sheets of .010" thick plastic on this one. It also shows one of the buttons I put on it, which is not needed but I can't myself.
