I recently moved to Montreal from Quebec and brought over my sign sauer p226 CO2 airgun and I'm curious what the by laws are in Montreal. I want to shoot in my back yard but it is a city and I am not sure what the laws surrounding it would be. Also do I need to register my BB gun with Quebec?

The Firearms Registration Act came into force on January 29, 2018 and all non-restricted firearms present in the territory of Québec must, therefore, be registered. This category of firearm, also called shoulder arms, usually includes rifles and shotguns.

The owners of firearms are responsible for registering such firearms with the Service d’immatriculation des armes à feu (SIAF) du Québec, even if the firearms were already registered in the former Canadian Firearms Registry."

That leads me to believe I should. Any help on the matter would be great thanks guys.

No, BB guns are considered to be unregulated firearms.

I don't believe there is any legislation prohibiting the discharge of an air gun on private property within city limits, but you want to make sure your neighbors are aware of what you're doing, if the police are called because someone suspected you were handling a firearm at that point a normally unregulated airgun could be considered a firearm for legal purposes.

My understanding is in no major city in Canada is it allowed to shoot airguns on your property. Inside sure. Would not be a bad idea to contact your regional police and ask.

I wouldn't contact the police, because you will just target yourself.

Inside is a grey area. What they don't know won't hurt. But house is still in the city, bylaws and rules still apply.

Do not shoot an airgun in your back yard or within a city. Anything that looks like a firearm draws attention from neighbours who may not know what it is. People may fear for their children and pets and themselves.

Montreal bylaw # CA28 0017, chapter 4, paragraph 33: it is illegal to shot with an airgun within 300 meters of any dwelling or any building.

How it is. Days of playing cops snd robbers are no more.

Or running around with guns. Unless you live where I live. The gas station and hardware store sellls ammo and everybody got a shotgun.

Best to go to your local police station and ask.....I did...no third degree.....never asked for my name.....just answered the question.....no airgun shooting within city limits....each city can be different though.I live near the very edge of town...but its still city limits so I have to instead drive 11 kms to go shooting...

my town's by-law reads as follows..

BL-9779 Discharge of Firearms Bylaw

The Discharge of Fire Arms bylaw regulates and prohibits the discharge of firearms within the boundaries of the City..
OMG, my basement is within the boundaries of the City!!

and yet there's lots of ways to shoot in the city..

4.1 The provisions of Part 3 of this bylaw shall not apply to:

* A Peace Officer,
* an employee of the City discharging a Firearm which fires only blanks,
* any person holding a permit,
* a pistol, rifle, trap and/or shooting range
* a slaughterhouse,
* a fair, midway or other such event,
* a person who has received authorization from the Airport Manager for the destroying of animals/birds
* an employee/contractor of the City for the purpose of control of wildlife
* a land owner.. on land over two hectares (5 acres) for the protection of such land from animals/birds
* a Farmer.. for the protection of crops/livestock/animals

whereas... 2.4 "Firearm" includes a rifle, pistol, shotgun, air gun, air rifle, air pistol or spring gun, but does not include a starting (blank) pistol in connection with an athletic event where blank ammunition is used.

I wonder how many criminals were actually charged under Montreal’s city bylaw for shooting someone?

Wow so basically...don't shoot in Montreal at all....unless it's a range... Or I gotta go outside the city...find some random woods and shoot it...and even then I got to hope no one calls the cops..I own a sig p226 CO2 its all metal and if you dont know guns or don't know what to look for you would think it's real so better to just use it at a range or someone you know who has land outside the city.

Actually now a date the 'city' just very huge... Anyone can look up the bylaws to see if any similar to GTA?!

If so...I think you need to take hours of driving to find a crown land....
