Looking for a new scope for my Hatsan 85 in.177. Just use it for target shooting. Wondering about whether I should get a FFP or SFP scope. And what about power? Do I need or just want a 6X24.

FFP or SFP is a matter of personal preference.... However, if you are contemplating a 24X scope, make sure it has at least a 50mm objective.... Even then, you can expect some dimming of the image at the highest magnifications.... In addition, if you are not shooting off a solid rest, I think you will find it makes it more difficult to hold steady, not easier.... For most airgun use, a 3-12X scope meets my needs, out to 100 yards.... For bench work at that range, I use a 6-18 X 44.... To get equivalent brightness of image at 24X you need a 60mm scope....

Since a FFP scope's reticle increases in size as the scope zooms in magnification they are more suitable for hunting where carry under/over are more critical than for shooting targets. I am confused by your scope specs; 6x24 means a 6x scope with a 24mm objective lens, and that wouldn't be a FFP since there's no zoom. You must mean a 6-24x(? - objective diameter). With that zoom range you should have no problem finding a magnification setting to suit your needs, but make sure that such a long scope will fit on your rifle. RC

Hi RC1947, sorry I meant 6-24X50. And i don’t know if I need that power at say 50 yards. I have been looking at the Discovery Scopes. Does anyone have any experience with them? They have an ED 3-15X5 that has a very nice reticle. Also a 4-24X50 with a very nice reticle also.

I've sold quite a few of the HD ones to the US and in Canada and most guys have been really happy with them. One buyer had his turret lock up and is sending it back to me. I'm getting a bunch in stock and will handle the warranty issues here.

I may as well share my experience with my first (and last) try at shooting with an 8-32X scope that I'd purchased just to see if I could handle the magnification. I didn't do too well because the high magnification amplified any motion coming from me and made accurate shooting impossible. I didn't feel comfortable until I lowered the setting to 10X. The big scope is back in the box it came in. I realize that my body motion didn't change by lowering the magnification, but what I saw through the scope did. RC

Good point. On a good rest it's ok but hunting above 14x gets pretty sketchy
