Today I purchased a Crosman Phantom .22 495fps to rid myself of chipmunks getting into the attic. I sighted in the rifle and the first 8 or 9 shots went straight through 1 sheet of 1/4 inch MDF. When I cam back an hour later to complete the sighting in the pellets would only dent the MDF. Why the sudden loss of power? Was it dieseling for the first few shots that gave the power needed to go through the MDF? Should a rifle like the Crosman Phantom .22 495fps just dent a piece of MDF or should it go straight through. Any help much appreciated!

I think you answered your own question.......you could strip the gun down, clean and lube it and shim the spring to maximize its potential. There are lots of posts on here for tuning the Phantom.

Rat Snap traps with peanut butter work well for chipmunks. Pellets go through 1/4 inch wood not sure if I would be shooting it around in an attic. Guess it depends on age of house whether wood could be soft or damaged. Could certainly go through drywall. As long as the wife/mom is ok with a little welt in her forehead I suppose.

Rifle was defective and store exchanged for a new one that after 60 pellets is still going through 1/4 inch MDF. Thanks wheeliehd, I think, for your reply but I do not intend to climb in the attic and fire the rifle in the house. I intend to eliminate the chipmunks outside before they enter the house.

Careful who sees you, even if indeed, shooting them is legal where you live.
