Fiberglass, by itself and not coated, is VERY abrasive - like a fine tooth round file. I use a real gun cleaning rods as they designed for this purpose. The are hardened, resist bending inside the bore which can damage them, especially over time, as well as many are coated, also to resist damage. |

For .177, I use a 1/8" x24" brass rod I bought at Canadian Tire years ago. I filed one end to a dull point to center the rod on the q-tip when I push it through the bore. I apply bore cleaner to one end of the q-tip, place that end in the breach and push it through. The first part dissolves the crud, and the dry end swabs it out. Just keep doing it until the q-tips come out clean. I recommend to never use wood doweling for a cleaning rod. If the wood splinters it can get jammed up inside the barrel. There seems to be lots of posts about trying to remove stuck wooden dowels used as cleaning rods. |

Should have mentioned my rifles are pumpers so cannot push/clean from breech or remove long Qtip at breech. The CT rod is described as steel plated , The Home Depot rod I just got is brass. Same thing though for no risk to barrel? I may stay with dowel for pistol barrel push through. |

Not sure how much force you guys need to push through the cleaning pellet... I never tried broken my bamboo sticks and it seems not that easy to do so... You never need to force he stick to go through the barrel, just push it, if it feels hard, there much be something wrong ~ and breaking a stick into pieces in the barrel just like a joke to me.... How it comes like that ?? Totally not understand ~ We are talking air guns not powder burners herw right? Or maybe using bamboo here would be better than wood? I didn't try wood sticks, but to my experience, in this small diameter, bamboo sticks will be much stronger than wood.... Sent from my LG cellphone |

If so, it will definitely not safe to use a brass rod on it.... Although I don't think you will need to clean such a barrel tho.... I said Kleen Bore- well they only make jointed rods now - I will never use one - too much opportunity to injure the bore and that is in a powder burner, let alone an air rifle. Birchwood Case makes one which is just as good- or better. Amazon sells them for the VERY INFREQUENT occasion you might want to clean your air rifle's bore. It's not that big of a deal for me to pull the breech and bbl on my pumpers. It takes all of 5 minutes for this partial tear down, and sure beats cleaning from the muzzle... -D.S. |

I use the regular dowels from a hobby shop or wherever, but also second the Bamboo dowels which I bought from the supermarket. I think it said they were for roasting marshmallows. I also have a portable rod which is simply several lengths you can push in one after the other. Like as a kid I had several little 4" sticks to clean out my pumper, usually from goofing off by puttng two pellets in which sometimes backfires. I have a kit now but I never use it b/c no need, but mention it just in case someone wants to. I like rods b/c you can pound nice tight fitting cleaning patches thru it, and if needed, unstick something. The line thing is a pita imo, but to each his own. Lastly; I have a long steel cleaning rod with a heavy black coating. It's meant for .17 Remington. I think I got it at Big 5? |
