Today I tested the penetration of six pellets in my soap, using my regulated 2260 which is 37 FPE.... Here is the side view of the recovered pellets....



and here is the front view....



Left to Right, the pellets are listed below, with the penetration in mm.... The lightest pellet was also the fastest, of course.... at 960 fps.... while the heaviest was about 800 fps....

JSB 18.1 gr. Exact Heavy …. 108 mm
NOE 19.7 gr. Hunter.... 103 mm
NOE 22.6 gr. Hunter.... 108 mm
NOE 23.2 gr. Magnum Hunter.... 112 mm
NOE 26.3 gr. Magnum Hunter.... 120 mm
JSB 25.4 gr. Exact Monster.... 122 mm

I used the deepest and shallowest base pins to cast the NOE pellets tested (not the flat base)…. The amount of expansion of the pellet head was roughly proportional to the impact velocity, with the JSB Heavy expanding about 0.008" and shortening about 0.035" and the JSB Monster not expanding and shortening only about 0.010".... The lightest NOE Hunter expanded about the same as the JSB Heavy, and the Meplat became cupped and expanded from 0.15" to nearly 0.20", and the pellet shortened about 0.020".... The heaviest NOE Magnum Hunter didn't expand, although the Meplat did expand about 0.010" and the pellet only shortened about 0.006".... The NOE pellets were cast using Rotometals 40:1 alloy (2.5% Tin), so are a bit harder than the JSBs, which are likely pure lead or nearly so....

It is interesting that the amount of cupping and expansion of the Meplats on the NOE pellets is quite sensitive to the velocity, going from significant at 920 fps to negligible at about 800 fps....

I expect any of those NOE's will work on the rock chucks as the flat points should produce
some cavitation, even at sub sonic speeds. The 22gr. likely the most, of course. The fact they
expanded at all shows they were being resisted significantly by the soap, even though quite hard
as pellets go.

I checked the hardness of the NOE pellets, which are cast from 40:1 alloy (2.5% Tin), and I could just scratch them with a 5B pencil.... The two JSBs I could just scratch with a 6B.... I tried some H&N and they were similar to the NOEs that I cast.... Crosman pellets could not be scratched with a 5B pencil, it took a 4B to make a mark on them....

Therefore the 40:1 mix I am using is within the range of lead alloys used for pellets.... harder than JSB, softer than Crosman….
