| Post subject: | Simple Quality Rangefinder Recommendations? |
Hello fellow Airgun Enthusiasts! I've been thinking of purchasing a simple accurate rangefinder suitable for targeting within our sport. I have a little Leica Disto which although intended for accurate (within 1/16") indoor measurements, works great outdoors under lower light conditions. Unfortunately on bright sunny days it's all but useless as one cannot see the red laser dot via naked eye. This little unit would work great with a green laser, but the integral red laser is proprietary and cannot be modified. Just wondering what other members might be using and could recommend from personal experience. Consistent 100 yard range-finding would be more than adequate for my needs -don't really need a unit that can measure a target 6 miles away. Quality over quantity is the motto here. Cheers! I've got this one for sale that works really good imo, gives the range accurately from my testing. Comes in a nice case. I even bought the special cr2 batteries and will supply one in each case. WOW - that is $400.00 cheaper than my Vortex rangefinder & the Vortex was $100.00 cheaper than the Leopold I was going to buy. |

OK- I use a Vortex Ranger 1000. IIRC, it was $490.00 with tax incl. The literature with it, says it will range deer to 500yards, same distance as the Leopold 1300yard range finder claimed for it, both had lifetime warranties and the Vortex was was $100.00 cheaper than the Leopold, thus, my purchase. When I compared them outside the store, they appeared about identical as to glass, etc. Oh- seems to me there was no focus on the Leopold, but the Vortex can be adjusted for good focus, however it is not necessary, most of the time. A plus with the Vortex, is the ability to give you the angle of inclination, that with a chart, can be use to judge the actual horizontal distance, or simply set the menu to read horizontal distance, and it will - perfectly, no matter the angle of inclination. If you hunt in mountains, THIS is very important. I used this range finder to win the black powder long range cartridge match at Hefley Creek end of August. The ranges to the targets were all marked, however, they were marked as actual yardage, not horizontal distance. My range finder told me the actual horizontal distance and I am sure this, in part, was the reason I won. I was also, perhaps a little better at extrapolating intermediate sight settings. I do give this wonderful piece of equipment kudus for helping me win. The ranges ran from about 18 yards, to 745yards. I fired only one shot using a rest, all the rest of them were offhand with this rifle. My initial sight settings were 20, 100, 150, 200, 300, 385, 500 and 600 meters, set up at our long range, range.

I use a finder similiar to what WES posted.If it's for air gunning,100 yds is probably max anyways.Also when i researched the top of the line vs &100.00 versions.I noticed that whether i paid a $1000 or $100 .They were all + or- 1 yd.. |

For the last decade or so, I've had good luck with a Zeiss PRF - Optic are nice - Easy to use

Avianmanor (Aa...) Well, I have a Simmons brand Rangefinder model LRF 600 that I find quite adequate. Can give distances within + - 3 feet either in YARDS or METERS. The model I have also has a great feature of Tilt Intelligence that calculates the 'true' vertical distance when beyond Horizontal. This is very useful in hunting situations. FT layouts don't have inclined targets...but when I'm out shooting Tree Rats...up in a tree I can better adjust my 'hold-over' for the accurate distance of POI. Works pretty good in low light or bright light environments. Very satisfied. Hawk-i |

The "tilt" intelligence gives you the actual horizontal distance on angled targets, not the vertical distance. This is the same as the Vortex rangefinder I described, however it has both functions you desire, thus can be set to give the actual distance plus the angle of inclination. |
