Post subject:  Shooting a springer without using hand for artillery hold

Hi,
I’ve got a new HW80 with scope, and shooting good quality pellets (JSB domed 15.59)
I am in the process of learning and practicing how to shoot.
From most of my research, I see that spring air rifles have a double recoil and require special method of shooting. The ‘artillery hold’ using the palm of your hand instead of resting directly on a sandbag.

My question is : is there a position I can use where I don’t need to have the rifle resting on my hand?

I am mostly shooting in my backyard or at the shooting range, both cases using a table.
In my yard I am standing and aiming downwards at the ground target, at the range I am sitting.
Ideally I would like to rest the rifle on a sand bag (or something) so that my left hand is free and I can bend my arm to fold it and have my hand tucked towards my chest (comfortable shooting position).
I’ve seen site that show people using a paint roller which allows the rifle to freely move (sort of replaces the hand for artillery hold I guess).
Any comments or suggest please. How can I shoot from a table and not have to use my left hand to hold the rifle stock for artillery hold.
Thanks!

I have a silk type material doubled over and place on my rest. Gun can slip on the material. But I do need my front hand to lightly hold the front of the gun slightly. Nature of the beast. With heavy recoil I can not see a way to ever shoot one hand. But I don't have to place my hand under the gun. CHEERS!

You could try a home made stand that uses a paint roller on a rod or pipe between a couple up rights. I had one and as long as the roller is perpendicular the rifle will move straight back and forth. Works well for bench shooting.

Hi,
you could put your hand on a sand bag and rest your HW80 on the palm of your hand. It's real stable and plenty fun not holding on to all that weight. You can tune your HW80 to the point of semi-recoil. Then you could rest it right on it's sweet spot on the sand bag and one hand it, kinda. Practice is the fun.
