I just bought my first air gun rifle, how do I practice at home basement?

Is there any rubber or soft material .22 pellets, just in case not injuring myself?

Thanks

Most people that shoot in the house have some sort of target box. There are lots of great examples in the target section of the forum. There are several methods of stopping the pellets. I use 6 layers of denim in my boxes.

I like to shoot at 10M, but use whichever distance you can safely manage at home.
You can buy a pellet trap, on build your own. Plenty of ideas out there

Once you have some sort of container that will stop pellets you don't have to worry so much on distance. 10 meters is the standard distance but some people do not have that in their house. I can stand right in front of my boxes and shoot 22 cal pellets and they do not come back out.

My advice to you and anyone else that is new to airguns is to spend an hour going through the target section of this forum. There are tons of great ideas in there for targets and pellet traps or boxes.

First, set up a clear area where no one or thing (many of us have pets) can wander into the range. Try to get 30ft or so, but maybe you only have 25 ft, that will be OK. You may have to set up diagonally, from one corner of your basement or garage to an opposite corner. That's OK too. I know someone who has an upstairs range from laundry room to hall closet, he makes sure no one is home before shooting.

No, you will be shooting metal pellets, they can and will hurt or damage anything they hit. So always control your muzzle, trigger finger, etc and practice safety. I have put a few pellets when I didn't intend, fortunately nothing serious - but be aware that whats coming out the muzzle can cost you big time so always practice safe shooting. Good luck and enjoy your Phantom, They are good rifles to learn on. :drinkers:

Yep~ although you don't need a PAL to shoot a sub 500fps rifle, it's still useful and educational to learn and practice the ACTS and PROVE when you handle the guns. You don't want to spend unnecessary time and money on repairing things besides having fun with your 'toy's~

Make it simple is just like Duke mentioned, muzzle control and put safe as first priority.

###
And there is one stuff named 'duct seal' which many of us are using as a back stopper in the pellet trap. Even you shoot it at super close range , like 1 foot if you like, the pellet from your non PAL rifle won't be able to penetrate it... Of course, won't bounce back but just bury into it. It maybe cost you a little bit at the very beginning, but it just last a long long long time and you don't need to care about it for years....

I use a 1 foot x 1 foot size cookie box as my pellet back trap. About 8 bricks on the bottom to stop the pellets. And I shoot about 8 meters away using the hallway as my indoor range....

I use a cardboard box about 10" cube and keep folding cloth material in it until it is stuffed full and I mean stuffed. The material will hardly compress. I only shoot at the two sides where the material is flat, not at the edges. I have never had a pellet go through shooting from 6 to 20 ft/lb of energy. Once the cardboard is chewed up, I open the box, shake out the lead from the material inside a garbage bag and then re-stuff another box with the cloth. The only noise is the pellet hitting the cardboard.

I use this box for shooting indoors and also when I use the chronograph indoors. Cheap, convenient and quiet.

Target box, if you have a scrap piece of 1/8" or 1/4" steel plate, some plywood and screws.
Front and back pictures. The angled steel plate deflects the pellets down. NEVER a ricochet out.
I staple a sheet of cardboard across the front, then clip targets in the clamps.

If using indoors, I am wondering if the steel plate back stop and the other steel plate targets would be too loud when pellets hits on them?

Depends on who's complaining. Honestly it's not any louder than a C02 Pistol.

No. If it bothers you, throw in some ear plugs. In fact, most airguns are louder then the level that hearing damage can occur. So the ping is least of your worries. You're going to end up with hearing damage. Esp if you shoot indoors, and the sound echos.

I already do, partial in my left ear. Was young and stupid, spent many years in garages building cars, working on diesels and work without ear protection. Work I was Infantry, Drove some loud trucks, shot alot of guns, and played with things that go boom.

That's true... Actually it's hard to make ppl follow the routines until ppl learned it by themselves by mistakes.... Like I seldom gave a full stop on stop signs until many years ago I got caught by a police officer and had a ticket... Now I did super well at every stop sign. Quick in, full stop, quick check every direction well (for hidden police car [emoji38]), and quick release...

And a stupid thing regarding hearing and airgun was I thought my 2240 was leaking, and thought I can feel the air with my skin then I pulled the trigger with the breech close to my cheek.....

So~ things ppl put on a book for a reason and better to trust that and follow it at the beginning will do it right~
