I had bought two of these on sale and tonight I tried out the second one. The first one needed a fair bit of adjusting the sights to get it zeroed, the second was dead on right out of the box. The second one also has slightly nice wood on it and it averaged slightly faster at 671fps (14.2gr pellet). I'm temped to get a .177 barrel for one but I see they are out of stock at Crossman.ca right now. For an all in cost of ~$133 I'm very happy with them. This might in part be because I haven't bought a break barrel since the Slavia 630/77 I got at the Army and Navy back in the mid 80's. I like my old Slavia but these nitro pistons are so smooth and powerful in comparison. Trigger seems better on the second one to.

The FPS seems a bit low for the 14.2gr pellets. I don't have a chronograph to test mine but others online are averaging around 720-750fps with 14.3gr pellets. Not sure if anyone can confirm if this is normal or maybe the seal just needs to be worked in a bit?

Here's the quote:

"As to the velocity you mentioned, there's one thing I can think of that you might try. Crosman sometimes sends out dry pistons in their guns. 1 drop of RMCOIL in the compression chamber (opposite of the barrel) may improve things a fair bit. The manual recommends this after every 250 shots, so I do it. After 5 - 10 shots the dieseling should be done and you can see if you think the velocity improves. I had a 17 cal that was dry and it improved 80 FPS after 1 drop of RMCOIL."

I was thinking it could use some oil but I don't have any silicone oil handy and I think is said to only use silicone oil. I also live at close to 4000' which might lower it a little bit.

A hobby shop that caters to rc cars will stock silicon shock oil. Buy the thinnest viscosity they have. Same stuff as Crosman chamber oil. About $8 for a lifetime supply.

I ordered some of the crosman silicone oil about the time I ordered the rifles, it should be here soon I hope.

So... I thought the Crosman silicone chamber oil was not flammable. I knew what dieseling was but I was not aware of, what I now know, is detonation in break barrel air guns. The first shot, about two hours after putting a couple of drops of the oil in the gun, resulted in a very loud bang, a flash from the muzzle, sparks from the breech, and a hole right through my steel pellet trap. My chronograph was in shock and displayed about 4 different numbers all at once with one being around 1500fps I think.

After thinking about it for a few minutes I knew I had screwed up. Deciding that I might have buggered the gun up anyway I decided to shoot again and for the next 4 or five shots it continued detonate but less with each shot until it began to merely diesel. About 50 shots latter it settled down and is now averaging 696fps with a 14.5gr RWS pellet. That is roughly 2 ft-lbs more energy than I was getting yesterday with the 14.2gr Grizzly pellets.

I hope I haven't taken too much time off of the gun's life span but I don't think I need to rebuild it just yet. The other Vantage received the same couple of oil drops but I don't think I'll pull the trigger on that one now. Do I need to take it apart (will need spring compressor) and clean the oil out or is there an easier way to prevent my possibly damaging it? Do I just go ahead and shoot it and hope for the best?

You are only supposed to put 1 drop in the chamber if its needed.

I know that now. The break barrels I've had before had leather seals and that would soak up the oil, apparently these newer guns with synthetic seals don't do that.

Yes, only one drop of oil in the chamber max! You don't want too much dieseling because it can damage/melt your pistol seal. If most of it has been burnt out you should be ok but I wouldn't put any more and I would try to get any extra oil out of the chamber of the second airgun.

Thats why we have this wonderful forum. There are probably a few dozen posts on dieseling in springers. And even the instructions that come with the guns specify no more than one drop. Most of the tuners on here use a moly paste meant for high temperatures. I have had good results with high temp brake lube. But I also have a quart of moly paste.

Try leaving the rifle propped up with muzzle pointing down. The excess lube might creep out the transfer port and down the barrel. Clean the barrel before shooting. Before propping up, you can break the barrel open and lever it so it almost cocks. Then close it up again. Do this a few times to try to work the excess lube towards the transfer port. If you removed the anti-bear trap then you could cock and decock to squeegee the lube down the tube. Leave it propped up (muzzle down) for a couple of days.
