I spent some alone time with the Vantage today. Due to space limitations I can only shoot 8m at home but I'm very happy with how it is going so far. For a scope I've mounted an old Leupold VXII 3-9x40mm with some Sportsmatch rings that I picked up on a trip to the UK years ago.

The Leupold can't focus as close in as 8m but despite this I am holding 10 shot cloverleafs on target shooting from the kneeling position. It appears that my earlier misadventure with oil detonating in the chamber has not done any damage. Velocity seems to have settled in at ~700fps with the 14.5gr RWS SuperPoint pellets (16 ft-lbs).

The rifle is very smooth cocking and firing, at least within my limited air gun experience. I also seems surprisingly quite to me for the power it has. I've read that the triggers are awful on these rifles and I can see how some people might say that. It certainly is not a crisp target trigger like that on my Dad's old Walther KKJ or even on my Ruger M77 hunting rifles but it keeps me honest. By that I mean I really have to concentrate on squeezing it correctly and maintaining my hold and breathing because with the long soft travel it is hard to know exactly when it is going to break. At least it is not a rough grinding travel like I've felt with some of the other cheap Chinese guns. My WF600 has a trigger pull that is much worse in comparison, my Slavia 630/77 is much better, on the other hand.

I've been keeping the second Vantage in the vertical position barrel down and dabbing up the oil as it slowly comes back out of the chamber. I want to avoid a fireworks show with this one. I think I'll try to get a .177 barrel for the second Vantage or maybe just keep it as a spare. They seem like great rifles for the $133 they each cost me with tax and shipping.

My WF600 was $108 with tax and shipping and isn't half as good as the Vantage, though there is something that I really like about the WF600 that I can't quite put my finger on.

Today I had the chance to shoot a hi power springer that was pushed the crosman 14.3gr pellet at 852fps (~23 ft-lbs). Shot into the same trap at the same angle this did dent but did not penetrate the pellet trap that my earlier detonation in the Vantage shot right through. This leads me to think the ~1500fps chronograph reading was correct, if so that detonation fired the pellet with ~71 ft-lbs of energy and the gun survived. I guess the Vantage is built quite stoutly.

Put a Bushnell AR 3-9x40 mildot side focus scope on the Vantage today. This is a big improvement on the 4x Leupold because at 4x and lower it can focus on the target in my 8m garage range. Paid $185 all in on a sale a short while back, it has a very good warranty so if I turns out it can't handle life on a springer I'll get it fixed and put it on another rifle. Seems like a great scope for the money to me.
