Brought my chrony today and second tin of pellets.
Cleaned a lot of lead out of my bore last night. Might try lubing them.

So if I'm reading that target correctly.... dime sized out to about 60 m.... a 75 m group with all 5 touching.... and just over 1" at 90 m ? .... I guess we did our homework on bore size and twist rate, huh?.... Bob |

Shot some chrony earlier 1900psi down to 1525psi 1050 1036 1030 1028 1017 1014 1004 1011 990 986 Stop Shot a bunch at rocks Pressure at 1000 and got 853fps 853cc tank |

Looks like you might dial the hammer strike back a touch.... I get 0.8 FPE/CI over the first 10 shots with the first shot the fastest.... Looks like the potential there for a really nice string in the high 900s at good efficiency.... Bob |

Yeah, that's awesome, 40 good shots at ~1.17 FPE/CI.... There are a few with low velocity in there, though, particularly shots 4-7.... Any idea why?.... Bob |

Valve stem oring dry as well as breech slide oring. Looks like I need to keep the bore clean and figure out a lube. Shot a dozen or so at paper 50yds and sprayed a 6" random scattering. After about four lubed pellets i got three in a clover leaf. Stopped on a high note until figure out the leading! |

Lovely string Walter I would grab some bore brite and polish the buhjeez out of it. I noticed that the 30cal pellets are as soft as butter,which is great but that could lead to leading issues. |

I use the VFG felt cleaning pellets.... Brownells carry them in all calibers, along with matching jags to mount them on a cleaning rod (I got the 8-32 ones).... The jags carry 3 pellets but I only use two, saturate them with light oil, and then add JB's Bore Paste (grey) for the initial lapping and the red Bore Brite for the final polishing.... Providing you use the right caliber, the felt pellets are a nice tight fit and don't wear out too readily.... They have one jag for below .30 cal and another for .30 cal and up.... Bob |

Flitz is a bit more aggressive than JB compound in that it polishes more quickly. I think Flitz is probably in between AutoSol and JB, but could easily be the same as AutoSol. Some of the RF experimenters use Flitz on their chambers and bores. One in particular I have in mind does this between groups when testing ammo in his mechanical monster return to battery 110pound .22LR 'test' machine. Tested on the lathe on mild steel, the effect of 1,000rpm test showed neither JB nor Flitz made a measurable difference, however the polish by the Flitz was much brighter. I did not test Flitz against AutoSol. I use a rod with long jag and a cloth wrap when 'polishing' bores - I've not done an air rifle bore, though. After about 20 strokes up and back (40 total) with the jag exiting the muzzle about 1/2 it's length each stroke. This method will actually polish the crown as well, without removing measureable steel. I replenish the compound every 10 passes (20 strokes. After 40 to 80 total strokes (depending on the condition of the bore), I use Kroil Oil (about any solvent will work) on single speared patches (Chifon- Wholesale Sports)), which ever is handy to wash out the compound - with the patches dropping off at the muzzle when the rod is extracted. A bore guide system would be beneficial to the bore and throat. With button rifled barrels, I've had good luck with just 20 to 40 strokes total. Cut rifled barrels require more attention due to the 'feather' left on the rifling corners. . |

I use the VFG as well. You can vary the compression with the cap nut. For the final polish I use a patch(with bore brite and lots of oil) thats so tight fitting it takes real effort to get it moving. I guess the only caveat I should mention on this for others reading this is that my rods are real heavy duty units. The only reason I use Bore Paste and Bore Brite over anything else is Brownells claims it's non embedding. Whether it is or not or whether that matters or not I have no idea. It works so I use it. |
