Post subject:  Crosman 2240 power mod?

Hello all,

I have a Crosman 2240 with a steel breach and a 10" barrel. I was thinking about adding a modified valve and a longer, stiffer hammer spring as seen here: http://www.amazon.com/Crosman-2240-2250 ... ve+crosman

I know that Crosman advertises the 2240 at 460 FPS, but we all know is does not actually shoot at that. Along with the 10" barrel, what gains would these particular mods add in velocity and would it put me over the 500 FPS?

Thanks all.

You may already be close to 500fps with the longer barrel unless you snipped a couple coils off your hammer spring...
I'd HIGHLY recommend you chrony your 2240 before you do any other mods to the valve, etc.

Thanks for the reply. Where does one take their airgun to get it chrony'd?

You buy one, or find a friend on here willing to let you shoot on his range.

You might add your location to your Forum profile. Maybe someone in your area could help out...

The problem with using someone else's Chrony is that it seems quite a few people have a habit of shooting them. Once shot, it's probably smashed. So either a part replacement or complete replacement required. Finding someone willing to risk that can be difficult with so many reports of 'oops, I shot my Chrony' in the forums.

Easy enough when you're maintaining standoff to avoid measuring muzzle blast and cannot use optic due to vertical standoff - that's how a gunshop owner killed his by not compensating.

Yeah, I had a near miss on my F1, clipping the far steel post about 5cm above the sensor on the left hand side a few weeks ago. I was using my new Brocock Atomic and was used to testing match type air pistols with just over 1cm between bore and sights, but with the Brocock I had a red dot in place a full inch over the bore. Enough difference to mess with my aim in terms of the Chrony position. The jolt slightly bent the steel rod holding up the light filter and snapped me to attention. So since then when I've been fussing with tuning the Atomic to get the flattest possible string of velocities I don't use the sights, rather I use instinctive aim at my putty trap. Shooting that way I'm thinking about the barrel location not the sights and my groups in the putty are all within 1", right in the middle of the Chrony triangle, a nice safe 15cm or so above the sensors. I can see how it'd be quite easy to shoot the thing, especially with a heavy firearm and a scope at close range. Easy to forget these sorts of things when you're thinking about muzzle velocity strings.

Waste of your time and money. The 22xx valve was designed for 24" .22 barrel and outflows anything smaller/shorter- for every 5% in velocity you gain with a modified valve and/or spring you use 50% more Co2, and the improvement drops off quite quickly- a case of diminishing returns to say the least.

Stick to a longer barrel, then look at going the other way- using a velocity adjuster to turn down the Co2 flow for the same velocity- the 2240 is wasting Co2 at anything under a 24" .22 caliber barrel.

If you want the most power out of the platform- go to an 18" or 24" barrel and a velocity adjuster- but the valve is the absolute last thing to look at for power increases (despite the fact some people have made their own little niche markets out of "improved valves" over the years- it doesn't make the idea any more accurate). If you are serious about power output- then look at going HPA and using a completely different tube/valve setup.

with just a 10 inch barrel your already getting close to 490 fps every 2240 i have put 10 inch barrels in averaged 480's to 490 a few at 493 you really gota be careful on the modding of pistols unless you live in the US then it dont matter what you do to it, also when you chrony you want to use a Crosman standard weight pellet 14.3 Grain , and yes buy a chrony you will get alot of use out of it, i was a fool when i sold mine and had to buy another one last year and i wont sell this one.

another consideration to look at my stock 2240 was shooting 418 Fps so i put in a 2289 hammer spring that was all i did and rechecked it and its now pushing 453 fps with everything else all stock , the steel breech does not add any speed and i do have one on mine and its still at 453 fps , so just that mod gained me 35 fps with just the change of the hammer spring..

i have seen alot of 2240s shoot 440 for 450 out of the box and a few at 460 and 1 ever only seen one at 466 fps thats over the 460 upto rating so its very important to know the guns speed before you mod .. a brand new chrony is about 100.00 and then a few bucks you can make a light kit for it or buy the proper light kit for it which is a reasonable price but well worth it, .

happy shooting

You don't have your location shown anywhere but if you are within distance of Hamilton I can bring my chrony over and check it

I realize the non Master models have a need to see the screen on the front of the chrony but why doest someone make a thick steel plate to cover the front of the Master models??
Id buy one :)
