I have never shot my el-cheapo Chrony's screens (Gamma Master), but I did put a 100gr. Nosler Partition at 3,482fps through both screens of my Oehler M12 in 1978 - then a 550gr. .50 cal. Cast bullet at 1,435fps through both screens of my PACT timer in about 1987. In both instances, the results were similar - calibre hole through the front sky-screen and the rest merely pieces! The chronographs I noted have separate screens, with 4 foot spacing.

Whether or not he knows it, a new air gun buddy I met here taught me a lot without even going through a tutorial process. I'm glad I caught on, because I was shooting through a crony for the first time -- his crony!

Point one: Neve have a target when shooting for fps readings. Have a safe zone in front of your chrony (e.g., the ground, a capable backstop such as a trap a few feet in front of the chrony, or nothing, if you have wide open spaces in front of you.

Point two: Find your chrony "sweet spot," and mark it on the front of the chrony.

Point Three: Don't shoot through your chrony at any more distance than is required to avoid the influence of muzzle blast on the readings. Typically 3-5 feet is sufficient, unless you're testing a "cannon."

Point Four: anchor you gun; this is not a skill test, it's a velocity test with $250 worth of equipment in your line of fire.

Point Five: sight your shot using a visual sightline along the side of the barrel, not through a scope or sights, especially if they are on a riser.

That's all I got, and I haven't hit my own Chrony yet, either.

very good points Ed
I say three feet is more than sufficient for any airgun. 8)
