Ive been wanting to do this mod since i got my 953 but other projects have had taken priority but after reading the thread yesterday by pete inquiring about the 953 i decided i have to get this done. So last night i took it apart and had it completed in just about an hour or so. This gun is very nice to work on, hardest part was lining the two plastic side peaces that run along the barrel to insert it back in the stock.

Gun was shooting 450fps before the mod and 495fps after, i didn't do anything but the piston mod i may go back and tweak the trigger and also do some stippling to the grip and stock its a little to smooth for my liking needs some texture 8)

Here is a link on how to disassemble it its based on the 853 but its exactly the same as the 953.

Here is the stock piston cleaned with some acetone to remove all oil and grease:

I drilled and inserted a small screw to give the jb weld something to grip on too but i don't think you really need to do this part.

if you do decide to do this just make sure the top of the screw head is flush or just below with the piston skirt face.

increased fps, and accuracy is still there, its a win win

did you average it, curious to know how consistent

Notice any difference in the cocking stroke since the mod? What pellet were you using?

Lately I've been thinking quite a bit about maybe getting one of those for some 10m basement plinking over the winter months. Was leaning towards the 853C Legend, but at almost 3 times the price as a 953, and now after seeing your groups maybe a 953 will find its way into my cabinet after all! :mrgreen:

yes at first i thought it might effect the accuracy but it didnt, it was shooting nice before like i have said but now it hits the the paper with a little more athority :D

I just ran two shots over the chrony after the mod, I will get some more numbers down and will post a string. :wink:

thanks Todd i must say i haven't noticed a difference in the cocking stroke there may be a little but not very noticeable maybe its because of the nice long handle, the pellets i used for the chrony where the Grizzly 8.6gr and for the target was the RWS super-H-point but to be honest it shoots the grizzly's just as well. :wink:

let me just say if you haven't already heard me say it before :lol:
for the money you cant go wrong, if you can still find it on sale for $60 like i did you will have a smile every time you shoot it, its not the most elegant looking gun but it's nice to shoot and sure does its job. :wink: you put a wood stock on it and you cant tell the difference from 853 except for the globe with Aperture Inserts but you can always put that on this one if thats what you like :mrgreen:

Did some chrony testing today and sorry i got a little mix up on the pellets and #'s i said above. :oops:
gun was shooting 440fps before the mod with the grizzly 8.6gr

So after the mod with the Grizzly 8.6gr i got 462 to 469fps.
and with the RWS super-H-point 6.9gr low of 492 and high of 498 8)

I have a 953 but I've never been inside of it.... It looks like a candidate for an adjustable Delrin Flat Topped Piston with the O-ring right near the end to eliminate headspace.... More work than the JB Weld, but I'd be nervous about the hard epoxy cracking because of the flexible piston it's glued to.... Maybe I worry too much.... :roll:

well the numbers certainly proves the consistency unaffected by the mod, again, nice work

rsterne; i wouldn't worry about cracking the JB weld, i flat topped a piston seal with that stuff, and it gets rammed in the compression tube every shot, still going strong

Nice work buddy. I like how you used the screw to grip the epoxy. When I did this mod a few years back, I used a small drill bit to carve small holes on the inner side wall and base for the epoxy to hang on to. More time consuming for sure.

Also, I see you filled your cup beyond the height of the outside rim. Does it overstrain the pivot pin at all? I checked my pistons that were filled just flush to the rim and I can see the valve's imprint so I know they're already fully touching the valve (minimized headspace) without extending the piston length.

Bob this piston cup is nothing like the piston on lets say a 2289 or others its not flexible at all it actually feels like its made of delrin or some kind of hard plastic, your idea would be perfect it wouldn't have to be adjustable just measure the correct size with the O-ring close to the lip, but I don't have the tools to make one or I would have. :wink:

Also I'm sure the valve could be modified to except more volume but that wouldn't help without a check valve as a pumper. But this gun would make a very nice PCP if the tube weren't so thin and had a way to pin a thicker tube to the valve, but im sure someone could think up something hint, hint, Bob. :wink:

Thanks bud, I know from the pic it looks like its more than it should be and I did put a little to much JB weld in the cup, but believe me its as this as a piece of paper on the lip that's why I said above to make sure you press the JB weld flat as possible, I could easily sand it down but its working fine so no need. :wink:
