Post subject: | How to machine the leade? |
Hi, Most of my crosman 177 barrels have a very sharp start to the rifling. Using a long probe the pellets engage with a very noticeable resistance and almost a 'click' which is somewhat unpleasant in operation, so I was wondering what the best way to smooth this transition would be. Which got me wondering how would one machine the leade in a barrel blank - is there some sort of special bit used, perhaps something like a reamer with a slight conical profile and maybe a guide to ride in the bore? Regards, Jim |

That looks like something I can try I was also thinking of trying a cotton bud coated with lapping compound (Q-tips are a pretty good fit for 177), but both ideas seem a little hit & miss. Jim |

Stolen from the GTA, videos by our own Sean Pero.... Quote: I put together a multi part series on making reamers for chambering and throating. The video specifically covers a throating reamer for a 45-70 but touches on and is applicable to Airguns Part 1 Making the tool body. http://youtu.be/ikrS6LiMZOE (video editing in progress, it will flip the correct way within 24hrs) Part 2 Hardening the tool http://youtu.be/FLDKenHq1A8 Part 3 Grinding the cutting flutes http://youtu.be/xVgitD8fQGo Part 4 Refining the flutes (video too big....editing in progress) Bob |

Wow, that's amazing. I've been wishing I could do case hardening, but I have to say, that looks pretty intimidating. Many thanks for the links. Jim |
