Should not be a problem.

X2!
Watch for the safety spring and ball if you are taking the frame away from the air tube! Both are very small!

by just removing the plate it will not cause the spring and ball to fall out.

But having the safety come out if you are fiddling with stuff, the ball and spring can come out! Murphy always helps me disassemble my guns!

Read and pay attention to rrdstarr....Is this your Lucky Day..Will the Little Safety Ball not go Flying or will it stay put?
Remember the saying of Murphy?
Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.
Those balls are hard to find..Some people use the safety plug chain on your bathroom sink plug to replace.
Also when replacing Safety spring and ball, put a little grease/jelly on the spring so the tiny ball will stick and will not go bye-bye.

lol....you know Murphy to Rick.

But seriously i just snapped this pic right now after 2240mod's reply, if you just lift the plate straight up the safety lever will not come out unless you physically remove the trigger blade with it and then the safety lever. so by just removing the plate straight up and installing the new plate you should be fine unless you know Murphy to.

Murphy applies. I often have the rod that the trigger is on pull out with the side plate. That brings the safety with it and if the ball and spring are still there they will (and have) gone flying. If you want to be cautious, just drop the entire grip frame off the tube first. That takes the pressure off the safety spring which you can then lift straight out of the top. Once the spring is out the ball can be tipped out and put in a safe place. Then you're good to take the side plate off.

Really Jim OK...but its never happened to me that way though, if anything it was the opposite for me, the first time i removed the frame from a 2240 I lost the little spring and ball, due to the fact that the gun was upside down after removing the screws  , and have worked on many since then but will never make that mistake again lol... so a little word to the OP if you choose to remove the frame make sure its right side up before you detach it from the tube.

Oh yeah, that could happen - good point.

I guess whatever you do, there's always a risk of it going walkabout. Maybe I'm just clumsy!

If you think Murphy is looking over your shoulder put the gun in a plastic bag before removing parts, then you will have a good idea of where to look for things that go "sproing" in the night.

If you're really worried, find a big enough clear plastic bag and do it inside that.
