Hi

I'd like to try recrowning the barrel on a Daisy 953. Does anyone know if the barrel can be removed from the valve casting (in a state that can be put back together again!)? It looks like a press fit on a D-shaped brass adapter, but it seems to be on pretty tight! There's an indentation in the barrel that might be a crimp mark, although crimping a steel barrel seems a bit unlikely.

You don't really need to detach the barrel to crown it.

True, but I'd prefer to use the lathe to cut the crown, and having the casting hanging on the end of the spinning barrel isn't particularly ideal. I think at the least I'd need to make up some sort of support for the back of the barrel if I was going to do it with the casting in place.

Is the crown uneven on your 953? all the barrels I've seen on 953's were nicely crowned. Perhaps you should try other pellets before recrowning.

Good call. I dug out a few more tins from the back of the pellet draw. The long forgotten RWS hobbys that never seemed to wrok well in any of my previous guns are pretty good in this barrel. It also does well with R10s. Having proven that the barrel can shoot well (probably better than any of my others at the moment) I'll try and hold my urge to mess with it in check. For now. Maybe. I struggle with the need to just see if I can make it better...

The crown is not visually uneven, it's just unusually abrupt compared to all my others. The crown is recessed very slightly, but the actual transition from the face to the rifling is as close to 90 degrees as I can detect. All my other barrels have some degree of chamfering at the crown, and I was wondering if this was contributing to the gun being very pellet fussy.

Jim I mentioned for you to try deferante pellets on the other thread espesially the Daisy pellets for some reason the 953 seames to like them guess you didn't take me serious lol.....another very good way to crown the barrel is with a dremel tool just in case you decide to go ahead with it.

Sure I took you seriously, it just took me a while to work through the pellet collection. The Daisys did work better than most, but the ones I have are really battered, so I don't have confidence in them and the number of fliers seems pretty high. They also chrony about 30 fps slower than most of my other pellets, coming out about 430 fps, so maybe the fliers are my poor follow--through.

RWS basics are also pretty good, but oddly bipolar. I think I must have pellets from two different dies in the tin as I get two distinct groups. Both groups are really tight, but about an inch apart!

One more pellet to try if you have them is the RWS super H point 6.9gr I found them to shoot very well, and you'll get a little extra fps.
