Looks to me like there are a LOT of pieces missing in the original photo, both pot metal and plastic?.... I guess that is why the OP made a comment about having to make an aluminum bolt.... Presumably he is going to replace all the pot metal and plastic parts with aluminum and try again?.... Makes you wonder, but he's been warned.... Bob |

That bolt is not a lot different from what's in most of the series 7 guns. Definitely not designed for pressure, and I agree about the further mods~ those bolts will open themselves on firing if there's more in the valve than originally designed for.... Regards, Doc Sharptail |

Wow.... is about all I can say upon this persons thought patterns and lack of foresight upon all components. A lack of bolt securment is the main cause of this boo boo. Next time back pressure could be a killer...jmo |

The odd thing about that thread seems to me to be the way he is so confident in his abilities as an airgun modder. I mean self-confidence is important... but to blow up the gun twice in a row at such an extreme pressure, that really does seem to indicate a fairly large blind spot. |

I guess Bart's reaction to it will depend on exactly how it failed and how exciting or otherwise that might have been. The plus side of a failure downstream of the valve is that at least the energies involved are a single shot's worth, and not the entire reservoir capacity. Then again, I would want to get a bolt between the eyes even at 10 ft lbs. Bob's J-slot breech design is looking more attractive to me all the time! The reference to another gun setup for 4500 psi is a little worrying. Obviously in many cases progress is made by learning from failures and making improvements, but it is important to have a decent chance of surviving the failures. Personally, I'm not sure the benefits of running > 3k outweigh the risks for anything but the most extreme of builds, but I'm a fairly conservative sort of person. At the end of the day the important thing is that everyone remains safe and we all learn from each other's experiences. Jim |
