Couldn't do it....springer withdrawal...picked up another Phantom (didn't lose any money on the first one)...put the spring I got from Eric in it...went through the whole deal again...clean, lube, deburr, cleaned up crown, removed first stage spring, installed RC Bearing to take up some of the trigger travel, etc. Why? Because after the ditching the first Phantom, I was reading about problems with consistent grouping with a scope because of basically too much movement in the hinge every time you cock it. So I thought to myself, I'll try one again and only shoot with open sights this time, eliminating the hinge from the sight line equation. I ditched the plastic hinge shims, measured them first with a digital caliper, ID, OD, thickness. Then I took my calipers down to the hardware store and started measuring washers. I found that the stainless steel flat washers were the closest match, plus one side had a bit of a bevel (I think they were 5/16, can't remember). The ID and OD were pretty well right on the money but in general they were a little on the thin side. I basically went through all of them, measuring the thickness until I found a pair that were pretty close. I installed them using a bit of Copper Never Seize Compound. So far so good, not binding and not sloppy. Guess what! I'm a lousy shot with open sights....there went that theory...so I remounted my scope and thought long and hard on the problem. What I was doing the first time was what they refer to as "chasing the bullet". I would aim at the bullseye, take the shot, and then start adjusting my windage and elevation. Every shot was in a different place. So this time, with the scope remounted I decided to aim at the bullseye, ignore where the pellet actually hit, and concentrate on grouping. Then when I had that down to an acceptable result, I would start to adjust the scope. Which is what I did. I'm down to a little smaller than a toonie for grouping, on average 3 out of 5 holes will almost touch with the other two off a bit, that's at about 11m with 7X zoom. It also seems that I was holding the rifle a little too loosely. I know that kind of contradicts the whole idea of the artillery hold. The front is rested on a bag, but I find that I get better results with a bit of a firmer shoulder plant than what I was originally using. Also using the pad of my trigger finger instead of the bend at the first joint seems to help. So things are looking up, I just need to work on my consistency.. Jim |

Funny you mention the artillery hold and how you find a firmer hold works better. My Benji Classic is the very same and basically the same platform. Rested on a bag or using a bi-pod I need to incorperate the same firm hold to get any results. Not so with any of my other springers. Remember too that the first tin of pellets through a rifle wont group great until there has been some break in. Something I seem to forget after each unboxing. Shoot a bunch first then try for groups. |
