The finish on my Lynx took a few scratches and a tiny ding since I've had it. It actually seems to scratch very easy. So I stripped it all off today :) Can anyone recommend a product that is tough to refinish it with? Not bedliner tough, doesn't need to be that drastic. just a wax or an oil that will put up with being rested on a tree branch or a fence post and not have a new scratch every time. And something not glossy. I try to baby my rifle as much as possible, but sometimes stuff happens right? Lol

If the metal is steel (I would guess a Lynx would be), I would cold blue it. If the surface is not smooth, the finish will be matte.

Plasti Dip has been quite durable on my car.

Don't like it, peal it off. Nice soft feel.

Is this for the wood or metal?

If this is for the wood, flat urethane will give a tough finish. You will need a stain first.

Go to Crappy Tire and buy VHT high heat caliper paint. I painted my motorcycle satin black with it a few years ago.....very durable.

I should have specified. It's for the stock. The finish in the metal is actually holding up very well.

IMHO, stick to Linseed oil based finishes. Tung oil blended with 20% mineral spirits, and buffed with 0000 steel wool or synthetic between every 2nd or 3rd coat will help with a hard based seal. The last 2 coats being straight Tung oil or if you can find LinSpeed oil finish. Then just buff to your desired matte finish. Variety of ways of going about stock finishing. Google is a friend to a mass of decsion making...lol

Tung oil was one of the more recommended ones for sure. But Google was t exactly my friend this time. I got so many choices I didn't know what to choose lol

Have you tried Tibet Almond Stick for the current scratches? It's really good at hiding small scratches. It's cheap and works great on furniture and most any stained wood, and the little tin you get will last most people longer than life. .
For quality wood I'd lean towards oil I suppose, otherwise I think polyurethane is the best to protect from damage like scratches. If you have a nice thick coat of poly on there and a scratch doesn't go down to the wood then no harm and it's an easy fix. I like the look and feel of wood, especially quality wood, but that goes bye bye with the polyurethane. The matte or flat has a better feel tho. It's like do you want that couch to look its best and be comfortable but it degrades, or go old lady and cover it with plastic sheet where it'll be safer and look new forever but with the obvious drawback.
Before I dive into oil I'd research Tung vs Linseed (aka Flax). I also remember stories about most of the stuff for sale having little actual oil in it, mostly solvents and other misc. Just fyi so you don't get something fake or that might hurt it. I also heard Linseed yellows over time and is not waterproof, but Tung doesn't change and is waterproof. So I'd research, but the poly or one of those two oils would be the only options I'd consider.

One more for tung oil! Starting to look like a good bet. I will check out the almond stick. The scratches aren't down into the wood of the stock. The factory blue finish seemed like it had a laquer that scratches on the surface real easy, but did seem to protect the wood. Have any of you used truoil before?
