Post subject:  Making A Hood For Front Sight

Hi there. So, I have a Crossman 795 Springmaster that somewhere along the line, I had happened to misplace the hood for the front sight. Does anyone here happen to know how one could make one for the gun, or has anyone ever made one before? If so, any tips would be greatly appreciated.

And if anyone here would happen to have one for a 795 Springmaster, I would also appreciate the dimensions, length and diameter.

Would a copper plumbing fitting work? Perhaps a 1/2" or 3/4" coupling could be fit to size?

Worth a look. Thanks for the inventive idea.

A binder clip is perfect. However finding the old round ones the right size, might be difficult.

Woody's idea will work probably better than mine because it's already cut to length and slightly larger diameter. I'm going to try it.

I use 3/4" copper pipe cut to the length I want.

When split lengthwise by cutting with a Dremel it springs apart a little, then it's a matter of shaping/fairing etc.

The picture makes it look a mess, but it looks much better in person. That's an "unwound" guitar "E" string with a drop of epoxy for a front sight.

Steel wool (0000) to polish it, or coarser if you want to paint it.

To force it apart when installing it on the front sight circlip pliers work very well.

The finest pin - head front site, is made from a hog's bristle, touched by a hot iron and set(glued) into a soft pine block. That was the 1880's version of a fine target sight for a muzzleloading bench rest rifle - Works.
The "G"? string  was a good idea. Sry - "E" string - good idea.

I guess I could have used a "G" string, but I didn't want the controversy of looking through a peep sight at a "G" string.

If you use a "G" string for a front sight would where the pellet hits be the "G Spot"?
