I thought I would try something to eliminate spring torque in my D350 magnum springer. I figure bearings are better than bushings in my RC vehicles so why not my air rifle.
I ordered ten 10mm x 24mm thrust needle bearings off Ebay for $6, only need one set but it was a good deal so I bought the ten pack. I had to make the od a bit smaller to fit the piston chamber but the id was good. The bearing and two washers are 4mm thick so you will see an increase in power if you don't adjust for that.
I polished my spring ends so I had minimal spring torque before but now with this mod I have zero spring torque.
I have put around 50 shots through to try out and the rifle shoots good, no side movement in scope when firing.
Just a short test , I want to take the bearing out after some more shots to see what condition it is in, should be fine though.
Give it a try, you just need to find the right size for your piston chamber.

Nice concept. Take the time to polish the sides(face) of the washers. Lay them flat on fine grit sandpaper or use polishing compound on a flat surface. Under the force of the spring any imperfections in the washers will cause binding. I would take them out after the first 50 or so shots and inspect for wear.

Good idea Notec, I will do that. I have only put around 100 shots through the rifle but I am curious so I will take a look tonight

This is a pic of the bearing and washer after around 100 shots, everything seems ok so I polished the washers and re-installed. I will check again after another tin or so of pellets.

I have seen that mod before but no one has posted any info after the fact . Nice job on the takedown pics . Curious what you're using for lube on the bearings .

Thanks Hobbyman,it does not surprise me someone has already done this mod,I wonder what their results were.
Just a thin film of moly should be good on the washer faces.

The results were not good. The thrust bearing will grind away to nothing because it isn't meant for load. The harsh impact from the spring will destroy it over time. Then all those small bits will be inside your tube grinding away at everything else. Not worth the hassle for the amount of good it does.

Well I started the experiment , I will see it through untill the end. So far so good. You mean not made for impact, there is usually some kind of load on a thrust bearing.
The impact might not be as harsh as you think in a properly tuned rifle, more shooting and I will update.

I had the 350 out the other day, put maybe another fifty shots through. It only takes a couple minutes to remove the spring to check so that is what I did. The bearing and washers still look good, no chipping or any other defects so far, I know it is early but I was curious.. For this test I am running the bearing dry with no lube. Here is a pic of the bearing and washers.

Update after 500 or so shots, bearings still look good with no imperfections, spring still rotates smooth. I don't know what happenned with the other tester that had bad results, maybe user error or a using to light a pellet for the rifle. I added just a thin film of molly on the bearing surfaces and will continue to test lubed, I have been running them dry so far.

I do notice a difference, kind of like shooting a gas ram rifle which is one of the advantages to a gas rammed rifle , no spring torque during the shot cycle. I can keep the target in my sight picture during the shot now where before I would have re-aquire the target after taking the shot.

How are the bearings holding up? I own a 350 also and was thinking of doing the bearing suggested.

I kind of did something similar a while back. Used a flat washer polished on one side against a teflon spacer I had made, film of lube between the two. Boosted the power by preloading the spring a bit, and quieted things down.

Great idea....I switched to gas rams but when I get another springer its getting the bearing.....
