Other than taking it apart and finding this? I had absolutely no idea, unless it spontaneously broke as I was taking it apart (unlikely...?). The two small pieces from the ends were threaded into the main part. I wonder if this is why my 40 yard groups were off...
Okay Vortek kit, you're on. Good thing you came with a new spring.

It DOES seem strange you never heard any crunching sound when cocking the gun but you certainly would have seen reduced fps over the chrony....I'd say about 40fps loss or so...which would show on your 40 yard group....which indeed it did.

Usually isn't that the springs would broken in the middle not at the ends?!

Actually 40 fps dropped I would think of leaking first and won't think about broken spring...

Actually it makes sense springs break at the ends where they are "secured".The travelling stress- forces come to an abrupt end when it meets a solid or semi-solid mount.I've broken enough car springs...camaro....corvette and sedans in my day and it was ALWAYS at the very end of the spring...I broke a Phantom spring....a few months ago...again at the end....Also...the OP didn't say 40 fps....I did...just a guess...he said he wasn't grouping the same as usual but didn't mention if they were grouping low and random.....or just random. A bad seal would give you a lower POI and not so much scattered.....A broken spring would put your pellets all over the map...due to vibration...etc....and probably at a lower point...due to less fps...

Well so far I am not too impressed. It is still dieseling a bit but at the moment no better with the Vortek kit than the "3 piece spring mod"...

It's reasonable then ~ I did have a spring of my Grand Am broken long time ago and at the very end just about less than half thread...

As you're well aware......your particular gun as well as the vortek kit come with high praise......and well deserved....I would say the new spring...seals..…etc...need time to "settle in" for a couple hundred shots.... Looking for great groups at 40 yards is doable with your gun of course but only after the new spring gradually loses some of its tension...seals conform to the tube...etc......ALL springs at first lose a bit of power until they eventually hit a plateau where the spring stays at a steady state...and POI becomes stable.....all else being equal ...NOBODY ever replaces a spring because its lost too power over time....that could take many years....My 45 year old Slavia with original spring and new seals STILL shoots only 40 fps or so beneath specs....although I stopped shooting it for decades...my point being that springs eventually plateau...I 'd be surprised if you weren't getting great groups after a tin of pellets....

I know... impatient.
I do wonder if I should have gone with the 12 ft lb unit though. I put the full power kit in a HW80 but while it smoothed it out, it made it so hard to cock that I didn't like it. Should have learned from that although this 77 is not too much harder to cock than before.

Well....I think we're ALL tempted by maximum power but cutting it back sure smooths out the shot cycle.....I wouldn't want to give up my 15+ fpe guns though.....they have their place....but lower power is sweet too....

Hello All....So did you take the piston out and clean it?... sounds like there might still some excess lube in there...KEN.

Hey DD, I got my TX back from AGS late Aug. when the rear spring guide broke and the cocking lever bent. They replaced the arm, piston seal, and rear guide. At the same time, they cleaned out the old grease and re-lubed the spring. When I shot it on the first trip to Burlington, it was very stiff on the underlever pull and the shots were not grouping like they use to. It was dieseling as well and when I put it through the chrony, the readings had fluctuations. After shooting it over the last few weeks with approx. 500+ pellets, the gun's internals have stabilised and i'm getting consistent readings on the Chrony. Plus, the groupings out to 25 yards are back to ragged holes. The groupings out at 40 and 50 yards are consistent to the groupings I was getting before the repair. Be patient and keep shooting. It'll definitely stabilise like "My Crosman" stated. The new spring has to be worked in like shooting a brand new springer out of a box. Always rougher at the beginning, but smooths out as you go. This is one of the many adventures of shooting a spring gun. Happy shooting mate! Hope to catch you on the range one of these Sunday mornings.

I had a couple break. Both about an inch from the end. When I removed the stock, I could see the mainspring coils were closer together because the broken piece usually winds it's self into the larger piece. Also, the barrel will travel further when you cock it due to the shorter spring.
