Hello airgun community and greetings from Victoria! I'm new to air-gunning but not to shooting. In the past with my old powder burners I would clean a gun for the first time with solvent like Mineral spirits. Today I purchased my first air rifle a Browning Leverage in .177 (Non PAL). Like all guns I wish to clean it before shooting it and while I have purchased a .177 cleaning rod and jig I was unsure about what to use on the barrel. Can the same stuff I used for my powder guns be used? Thanks! |

Hi - welcome to the CAF (from an ex-resident of Victoria)! You should only use very gentle cleaners (like 10 weight motor oil) on an air gun barrel; since it never has to contend with the harsh corrosive effects of PB chemicals. And for the most part you should not need to clean a brand new air gun barrel as any residual oil will be blown out when you fire it...

New guns may have some protectant oil on it but nothing like a sks dipped in cosomline. No issues running a patch or two down the barrel with standard cleaners to mitigate dieseling. Should help with accuracy consistency. In the long run lead can buildup in the bore so go ahead and run another patch or two should you notice a drop off in accuracy. All due respect to wllm995 but you don't have to worry about your leverage being damaged by cleaning solutions. It's a stout build. |

Thanks! I ran a dry patch through followed by some .177 felt rounds. I had also read that this particular gun needs a long break in time (700-1000 rounds). I assumed (probably incorrectly) that any brand of pellet would do for this break in period I picked up 2 tins of Daisy .177 WC's.. First 5 rounds went fine.. now I'm starting to get something odd, the spring releases but it feels like it's dragging and lurching rather than flying smoothly forward and doesn't discharge, it un-cocks but the pellet is still in the chamber, re-cocking and firing doesn't clear so I pop the pellet out with the cleaning rod, fired 3 more, and then a repeat. Cleared and then a 3rd repeat.. So I have stopped shooting. Could my spring need lubing? Or could it be the ammo? Should I be taking this thing apart? Thanks! |

Spring guns will require maintainence time to time. It is quite possible and probably by your description the piston seal is not lubed even though new. Maybe youtube has a video demonstrating disassemble of the leverage. All spring guns are similar. Just be careful when releasing the spring. Should not be a issue with sub 500 springer but some pal rated have quite a bit of preload. Moly lub is the best stuff for piston seal but more and more difficult to find these days. You will want the high percentage of moly stuff. Not what you get at CT. |

Sorry, but I have a quick question... Isn't that the moly paste are for use on the springs or metal to metal surface only? Can I use it on the seals which made of rubber / plastic or anyway non metal materials too? Sent from my LG cellphone |

I have RWS Chamber lube and spring oil... I'm thinking if it has failed this early (and it's not shooting at all now) then I may be smarter to RMA it and avoid any further issues but I'll take the stock off tonight and see if I can find any obvious problems. Further tinkering to make a new gun function is not something I'm interested in doing so it'll be a return if that fails. Thanks all! |

Update.. I took off the stock. I found 2 holes drilled (one on each side) with obvious chatter marks. I HOPE these are the holes for the spring. The manual is all but useless in this instance. I put 2 drops of spring oil in each hold and will let it stand for a bit (I work from home so I can go back and forth to it) and then put it back together and see if that helped. I don't think I have the tools or knowledge for a further take down though. I will see if I can attach a photo even though it's not exactly clear. Thanks! Attachment:

Put some spring oil on the part of the spring I could see and the.. cylinder thing that moves with it.. Fired 5 rounds, only 1 dud so maybe a little more lube. I don't know anything about compressing or even accessing the spring though so a closer examination may be beyond me. |

Well in the end it was the ammo! I was having more issues with the Daisy precision but had a free sample tin of Meisterkugelen (a word I will never try and say out loud) Wad cutters, 8.2g. 30+ rounds later not a issue. 3rd Daisy round after those and back to same problem. So I guess this gun is a bit picky on pellets.. or at least doesn't like the cheapies. Thanks to all for the help! |

Looks I don't bother to do so then ~ Sent from my LG cellphone They're flat nose and I noticed after shooting some of those RWS that the Daisy flat nose seemed to resist a little when loading so I think they were jamming right at the breech. I had a 2nd tin of hollow points and they have all loaded and shot fine but that tin of flats refuses to play nice. The RWS pellets with the German name I can't say are also flat heads but they load and shoot without troubles as well and a tin of Winchester round nose shoot without issue too. So I have most of a tin of Daisy pellets to gift off to someone at some point. Getting the rifle to shoot has really enhanced my enjoyment of the whole experience!  Cheers! |

I'm happy you have it sorted out. I experienced the same thing with the daisy precision flat pellet in 177. Shot great out of my 953 (no kidding huh) but not at all through my umarex surge. Same symptoms as yours. Too bad as they are accurate enough for practice with the 953 at a great price. |
