Hello I was noticing that my spent pellets have side deformations to them. I'm completely new to the whole air rifle scene so I was wondering If I could get some input on this? I'm worried that my piston pin is somehow pushing the rod crooked into the chamber? Its a Crossman Fire Nitro 495fps I have included a photo.

Thanks

Did you try using a long stick to push a pellet through the barrel to see if you can notice anything?

And what's the target you were shooting on?

And do you have some playdough in the house? Try shoot a pellet on it and it won't penetrate too deep, I think 10 meters away, maybe only one inch and less than two inches for a non PAL rifle... But you should harvest a very 'undamaged' pellet with only rifling marks... At least you can know the rifle causing that or something else...

What is your target and backstop.....because it looks like one pellet is simply contacting another pellet stuck in your target or backstop....Can't see any other reason to get that deformation from just loading a springer and shooting...

Yeah~ if the barrel causing that, the pellet head should deform first..

Hey everyone thanks for the quick replies. For the back stop I'm just using a thick piece of foam (roughly 5 inches thick decent density) and a couple layers of cardboard stapled to a wood board. So a pretty soft impact. I got another photo here of a bunch of other ones I shot through the gun. It seems like every other shot has some kind of "edge" impact/folding.

Looks normal to me for spent pellets....lead is soft and distorts easily on impact....even dropping one on the floor will bend a skirt....like I said there isnt anything within the gun that would cause that....its just normal damage from impacts...shoot and enjoy....

I think that's caused by your high density foam... The pellet skirt is thin and soft, so when the pellet head shot into the foam, the foam can't do anything to the head, but the 'high density' just squeezed the skirt...

Try shoot other target to see the result ~

Hey everyone I took your advice and shot toilet paper rolls of all things and when I dug the pellets out they look perfect. The foam/cardboard/wood combo for sure was doing something to the pellets. I appreciate the help!

Nice ~

And I think why the skirts are bent on one side only is because its spinning direction by the rifling... so the force from getting through the high density foam actually will only coming from one side and bent that side until it was stopped....

Science is interesting ~ right?!
