I got my hands on a first gen 1400 in pretty good condition from the classifieds but it doesn’t build pressure . I knew this when I bought it . I needed to take a bit of a break with the PCP game until I come up with a few solutions . So started tinkering with the 1400. After reading just about all I could find I tore into it . First was to make a FTP , which I had material for . This took all of about ten minutes as I already done one in the past for a 1322. Next up was tackling the valve . From the reading I did , the stock volume was pretty poor so that needed to be addressed . First was the body , I cut off two threads from the male side , then after measuring , bored out the body leaving .125” of material leaving only the first two threads. There was no spacer in this one but thought I might as well get as much volume as possible . I took the check valve and drilled out as much material as possible leaving just a lip for the spring to sit against. Last was to open up the exhaust port. I opened it up to 5/32 “ . I then turned my attention to the remaining ports as the rest of the rifle is in pretty good condition . Got all the ports matched up including the probe and had them at 5/32” . Not sure how this will affect the power but worst comes to worst I will have lightened the load on the trigger by lowering the valve pressure. I also had just about every o ring . The only exception is the quad seal , let’s hope it’s still good .

Been raining here so I figured I might as well give a go at the stock .it turned out a bit darker than I wanted but I’m actually impressed on how it turned out . I started by taking the old stain off, I think someone refinished it at some point as there were fine sanding marks with the tell tale darker scratch marks . Once that was off , I went through the sanding process finishing with an 800 grit . I also tried my luck with some stippling around the grip area .Stained it with a black water base stain and a couple of real thin coats of tru-oil. I had an AR2078 adjustable butt pad laying around and fitted it to the rear of the stock . This required me to cut the but-plate flush .
I contacted Rick at precision pellet and will be getting an aluminum spacer as the one on this rifle is cracked .

Now just waiting to test over a chrony , I did a few dry fires at 10 pumps and I can tell the trigger is much better than before at the same amount of pump strokes .

Managed to do a bit of chrony testing . It’s a little low on power at ten pumps but that’s what I expected from opening the valve up so much . Hit 640 FPS with 14 grain pellets at ten , and the velocity climbs close to 15 FPS per pump after that . The trigger at the ten pumps is now what I would say is a nice single stage hunting trigger , probably equal to the same gun at 6 pumps .

I think I’m just about done with it for now until I get parts .

I got some stainless sling swivels from amazon yesterday and mounted them right away. While playing with it I removed the Williams sight from the 392 to see if it would fit . Looks like to make it work I would need to cut a flat on the barrel then tap a couple holes ,not too complicated but I would really hate to screw up the barrel . I’m going to have to think about this one . I’m really liking this little rifle I’m going to have a hard time letting it go when done .

Maybe you could make a replacement, longer rear breech plug to put the sight on, this way you don't risk messing the barrel and the rifle could be brought back to original if needed :?:

That’s a great idea. Not too complicated to make either . I’ll have to see what material I have to work with but that sure sounds like the ideal solution . Thanks airmec. :)

Last but not least , I got the Williams Peep sight mounted . Thanks again airmec for the idea. although I used some fairly soft aluminium for the plug extension it seems to be really sturdy. The plug is 1 1/4” long with one end turned down to .312” to fit inside the existing location and the remainder at .558” like the OD of the Benji 392 breech that the sight was designed to fit . I have to sight the rifle in with the new Williams but I can already see I’ll like it much better than the factory unit . Best part , no mods to the factory barrel .

Nice Work! I like the stock work. I finished my 140 and have since let it go. When I was having the valve trouble I bought some extra quad rings. I have 2 left one is new and the other one was in the valve but I replaced it when I could not find the leak. If you are in need of these send me your address and I will drop them in an envelope and send them to you.

Kevin
