Total bonehead move on my part. I reassembled this Hatson 55s break barrel but forget to put in the stock screw down by the trigger. When I tried to cock it the steel flipped out of the stock & I heard the sickening sound of wood cracking at the linkage pivot. I should have checked the parts tray before assuming it was completely assembled.

Luckily, the wood tore out around the hole and not through the whole piece. I have three pieces that fit together in the hole nicely. Should I glue the chips back in or toss them and fill the chipped out area with steel epoxy puddy?

I'm not sure if it helps but I've covered the entire stock in painters tape because it seems more surgical.

I would use wood glue, the little crack, some glue and tooth pick dab some in the crack, then glue the piece back in. Clamp and wipe off the excess.

Agree, glue clamp and wipe will do the job

Titebond 2 or 3 will make it stronger than the surrounding wood. The Titebond glues are also moisture resistant. If using epoxy, use a slow cure, 24 hour epoxy.
That will have the same strength as Titebond 2 and 3. All faster curing epoxies have less strength in shear, the forces the forend will be holding up to.

I trimmed the splintered edges of the chips to get them to fit in the hole nicely so here I'm filling the surface gaps with wood glue mixed with maple saw dust.

Thanks, I felt pretty bad the night I did it. I just put it down and went to bed thinking "there goes a perfectly good gun down the drain cuz I'm an idiot."

But now it's a totally recoverable error and since the repair is on the inside no one will know how dumb I am.

To rebuild the shoulder that supports the bolt washer I filled in the hole completely and will re drill it. Shout out to Durams Water Putty. This stuff is amazing. Made of wood binds to wood and you can mix it to a consistently from putty to oatmeal to fill deep deep holes in one go. You can even mold and sculp with it. And like the label says it dries ROCK HARD. I used to only be able to find this at high-end paint stores like Benjamin Moore but now I see Home Depot carrying it to.

Wood glue for sure , yellow all the way .
Lots to clamps and a piece of parchment paper on the cracked side, on the outside try some thing longer for better support. On the outside use some foam pieces as not to mat the out side ,let it sit for 2 to 3 days in an warm but not hot area. Clean up the inside and lightly sand the spalded area to fit, as for your strength boss choke up on the screw driver!
Love the tape though, not a red green moment but getting close..

Glad you were able to fix it! Crazy how it broke inside and left the outside fine. My first thought was super glue b/c I used it for balsa wood and other misc wood repairs. It works awesome and of course fast. I think the reason it works so well is it soaks into wood. Like JB Weld is awesome stuff but it doesn't soak in much at all so it isn't very good for wood. Just a thought...
