I have been asked to install sling swivel studs on someone's rifle, but there is an older type of loop mount that is currently screwed into the wood. Is there a good epoxy or filler that can repair the hole so it can be drilled and re-used for the new stud? Ive done sling mounts before but always on "virgin" stocks. I've been told it can be done instead of relocating the new stud. Have I been misinformed?

I usually fill it with dowel and glue.

I've been using pcwoody, it takes 24 hr or more to cure fully, but it sticks well and can be drilled/sanded when cured. it doesn't stain really after, but i have tinted it with stain when mixed with good results. I've used it on moving parts on spinning wheels, bobbins, whorls.. and its very durable.

If it is only a stripped screw hole, head on down to a hobby shop or lumber yard that sells hardwood dowels in two or three foot lengths. You can purchase them as small as 1/8 of an inch.

Drill the threads out of the hole and plug with same species and grain structure of wood, using ordinary wood glue. Titebond11 or 111 is a good one.
Once the glue has set, 24 or more hours later, re-drill.
PCwoody looks like it might work well, too.

Great, thanks everyone... some good recommendations here. The owner is a good friend and its a nice rifle with nice glass so I dont want any accidents with the sling. Cheers!
