I recently acquired a 2289, it looks like it has been well used and showed a lot of cosmetic wear. After reading duke’s post “Crosman 22xx/13xx vs Diana chaser/Bandit” it inspired me to make this a fun project.
Chrony readings before any mods were avg. 360ft/sec with 14.3g pellets.

My plan:1- re-blue the barrel.
2- thread and re-crown barrel
3-make a pivot pin that’s easy to remove.
4-machine bolt to accept a magnet.
5-plug bleed hole on valve(re-check with chrony).
6-install steel breech and my last custom bullet bolt handle.
7-Replace any bad seals.
Not necessarily in that order.

I have never blued anything before so I thought this would be a perfect way to learn. After lots of YouTube research I decided to cold blue the Barrel with Birchwood Casey “Perma Blue”kit. It comes with everything you need, bottle of blue&rust remover,cleaner-Degreaser and the bluing along with steel wool,dabbers,oiled wipes and fine sand paper. I got the kit at my local gun shop for only $20(canadian tire was $40). It was a very easy process. One thing that helped was that I have a lathe. So I was able to polish the barrel, and while I was at it I threaded and re-crowned it also.
All my other mods have been completed,now l need to rechrony. I used a 2-56 button head screw to plug the valve bleed hole(no drilling necessary,hole is already proper size) just in case I need to remove it. I got that from a previous post by,I think it was rsterne.
I’ll post my new chrony numbers later, weather permitting.
I am quite happy with my bluing results and overall build,now I won’t think twice about bluing any of my project pieces.

Maybe I need to make a wood stock for it now.

That's awesome machining and bluing - you have brought that 2289 back to life and it's a good looker. :)

Cold blue, applied over and over and over again until you get a perfectly even colour, then killed with running water and rubbed with soft cloth, then oiled
can be a good finish if not handled much on the finish.
Birchwood Casey's Paste or Cream Blue, had been good to me.

Great work! I have minimal skills and tools for this type of work so when I see someone taking this kind of effort, I applaud it.

The 2289 was my first Airgun. It is my favorite Airgun! I just love the thing. I even competed in the Hunter Division of Field target with it. Too bad all that pumping made my arms tired. LOL. As you can imagine, I did not place, but I always had a great time. Needless to say, the 2289 was far more accurate than I was. :oops:

Thanks for the compliments guys and that’s a cool story tyerant. Shooting this airgun on a regular basis would give you a “Popeye”left arm. :D

Hi Didd,
An annoying technical point just in case you weren't aware...
I believe Crosman lists the 2289 as a "pistol", and thus, so do law-enforcement across Canada.
So, as silly as it sounds, if the air "rifle" were to exceed 500FPS it could be considered an actual "firearm" under the law.
Further, since it's a "pistol", it would then be a "restricted firearm" in Canada, which requires an RPAL.
Frankly, under the current regime, I've no idea the legalities surrounding airguns let alone pistols. I'm no lawyer!
That said, I look forward to seeing how it turns out! (I have a couple 2289's with modest mods to them).

Crosman actually list the 2289 as a rifle,however it seems like a grey area that I don’t want to enter.
This thread explains how to keep the 2289 under 500fps.
I didn’t flat top the piston/valve but I did tap the hole for a 2-56 screw so it can be removed.
Now I just need a 2240 hammer spring,and more testing with chrony.

A wise move keeping it under 500, I think!
I've always thought the limiter in a pumper should in the pump rather than a hole in the valve. (On a production line I guess it's cheaper just to drill a hole in existing part.)
I'd envisioned a flat-top pump containing a check valve, backed by a small but strong spring, backed by an adjustment screw to tune the gun to sub-500 velocity.
The advantage is less pumping to get same muzzle velocity (yay).
Never got passed the the drawing board phase... Hey, maybe you should try it?!?!

So today I messed around with a 2240 hammer spring and my chrony with 14.3 gr pellets. I ended up trimming 1 1/2 coils off the spring.
At 10 pumps I was getting 485fps avg. and the valve was retaining a bit of pressure.
At 12 pumps it averaged 490 fps and retained a lot more pressure in the valve.
At 15 it stayed at 490fps.
I didn’t want to go any farther fearing lock up or piston destruction.
So I think I can safely say my 2289 is sub 500fps.
It seems that 9 pumps is the magic number, at 9 I was getting 475 fps avg. and very little,if any pressure retained in the valve.
I like your idea Arden,it would take a lot of redesigning on that valve. Sounds like a project for when I retire.This was much easier.
I’m quite happy with 9 pumps getting 475fps.
Conclusion: plugged bleed valve, 2240 hammer spring with 1 1/2 coils removed,got my 2289 from
360 fps avg. to 475fps avg.
As was stated in the thread linked above,each gun is different and may require
More or less modifications to make sure your sub 500. Thanks to rsterne’s research everything I did was based on his findings.
Now my attention is turning towards a battered phantom,a friend gave me to fix up.

What's going on with that battered phantom? [emoji23]. And am I right that under the "law" the chaser carbine would be illegal too? I mean I bought the thing brand new. Didn't modify mine at all but I get an avg of 530 down to 495 on one co2 cylinder with 7.4 grains. Does using a heavier pellet make it legal?

Grey area 100%. It's surprising that the UK is even more lenient with airguns then Canada [emoji849].
