Thinking about getting a Browning Hi-Power pistol. Anyone here have experience with one? How are they compared to other modern pistols? Where would the best place be to look for one? Thanks |

Nothing wrong with them, they are a classic design. Personally I like the old gloss-blue with walnut checkered grip and low sight. They are a "service" pistol. The price of the ones made in Belgium and the Canadian made Inglis are getting a little out of hand.  Parts/magazines are readily available. |

The Inglis ones are pretty cool. Made in Canada in 1944/45. |

If price is no obstacle get one made during the Nazi occupation.They have the "dirty bird" markings.Then there's the shoulder stock/holster hi-powers made for the Chinese Nationalists. |

The Hi Power is one of the most comfortable pistols I've ever held. Now that the Israeli surplus ones seem to have dried up prices are going up. |

It doesn't help that they ended production in 2018. There are some clones being made in Turkey though. |

I used to collect Inglis Hi-powers but now I just have a mk3 that I use for shooting, it has better sights and I don't worry about wearing out the old collectable ones. I learned to shoot the Hi-power in the Canadian Forces and I love them, they point so perfectly for me unlike glocks. |

I've used FN Browning, FEG and used/carried a Inglis Hi Power. The problem is they don't make Hi Powers anymore as the tooling is beyond repair. So prices sky rocketed. I personally like the FN over the FEG ( FEG was a Spanish copy ) and Inglis. All the Inglis ones I used were beyond serviceable and never worked right. Even the one I used overseas. But a Turkish company started to make some High quality around 800$ FN Brownings that probably would be in your budget, plus some modern upgrades VS a used one that many would want collectable prices for. |

FEG is Hungarian I believe. They make good clones. TISAS is the Turkish company. The quality has been iffy with some internal parts and the dimensions are not exactly the same as the original Hi-Powers. They do have a pretty cool stainless steel version though. |

There are 2 version of the FEG. One like a Hi Power, the other like a S&W. I know when I bought my FN Browning it was about 600$ but that was like a decade ago. Personally, I'm a CZ nut, Id go with a CZ75. |

I will second the CZ as a better purchase. The FN HP I shot back in the 70's worked OK. |

Don't get me wrong. I love the BHP and it paved the way for the future. But you can make a CZ75 grip thinner than a single stack 1911.. And nice grip = better shooting. My 1911 width with standard grip panels are 1.3" wide. My CZ 75 with thin grips is 1.13" and it is a double stack magazine. And biggest issue with the BHP is the safety. The standard safety is near impossible to operate with gloves, or if your hands are slippery. I have not shot a MK3 that has extended controls. The CZ75 is inspired by the BHP. With CZ being super popular in the shooting world, you will never have a shortage of CZ parts. |

The Mk3 safety is much easier to operate than the original, ambidextrous to. Very good point on the CZ75, it is one handgun that I've been temped to get because of it's similarity to the ergonomics of the Hi-power. |

For a range-only-toy, the safety with glove is kind of a moot point. - If we've be allowed to CCW. I would go for a point and shoot interface, like a Glock or a revolver.

I used to make and sell reproductions of those maple leaf water decals back when I was a collector. I see them come up for resale once in a while. |
