I received my XS120D today from WesB. Thought I share with you my observations. First of all, the overall quality appeared to be somewhat less than the Beeman P17 in many ways (of course it is even further from HW40 quality):
1. No fiber optic sights.
2. No set screw to lock the pressure tube pivit pin.
3. No set screw to lock the piston pivit pin. (I drilled and tapped for a 4mm set screw so the pivit pin will stay put)
4. Gritty feeling trigger, even after polishing and lubbing.
5. Lower quality o-rings on piston (compacted) and breech (leaked).
6. Burrs on barrel tip and Super deep chamfer on factory crown.
I did the aluminum tape mod (6 layers 0.36mm) on the piston head to increase the compression during cocking. In combination with replacing leaky breech seal and the compacted piston o-ring, the muzzle speed went from 290 fps to 375 fps with JSB Exact 8.44gr. I am happy with that.
The trigger parts were taken apart to polish and lube. It went from gritty and binding to just slightly gritty. At least it breaks cleanly now. Maybe the gritty trigger is the result of using a lighter spring than P17 and the very rough finishes in the trigger group.
The pivit pins for the piston, pressure tube, cocking latch all moved after repeated use. I got fed up and added my own set screws on the cocking latch and piston shaft. Not pretty, but at least no more worries.
Accuracy after 300 or so pellets shot is grouping at about 1 1/2" (my standard 10m benched with laser sight). I expect it to improve with use.
All in all, the XS120D is a cheaper alternative that comes with way more than what can be expected at this price. However, it needs a lot of work just to equal the performance of the Beeman P17, let alone HW40. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.
