I received my XS120D today from WesB. Thought I share with you my observations. First of all, the overall quality appeared to be somewhat less than the Beeman P17 in many ways (of course it is even further from HW40 quality):
1. No fiber optic sights.
2. No set screw to lock the pressure tube pivit pin.
3. No set screw to lock the piston pivit pin. (I drilled and tapped for a 4mm set screw so the pivit pin will stay put)
4. Gritty feeling trigger, even after polishing and lubbing.
5. Lower quality o-rings on piston (compacted) and breech (leaked).
6. Burrs on barrel tip and Super deep chamfer on factory crown.
I did the aluminum tape mod (6 layers 0.36mm) on the piston head to increase the compression during cocking. In combination with replacing leaky breech seal and the compacted piston o-ring, the muzzle speed went from 290 fps to 375 fps with JSB Exact 8.44gr. I am happy with that.
The trigger parts were taken apart to polish and lube. It went from gritty and binding to just slightly gritty. At least it breaks cleanly now. Maybe the gritty trigger is the result of using a lighter spring than P17 and the very rough finishes in the trigger group.
The pivit pins for the piston, pressure tube, cocking latch all moved after repeated use. I got fed up and added my own set screws on the cocking latch and piston shaft. Not pretty, but at least no more worries.
Accuracy after 300 or so pellets shot is grouping at about 1 1/2" (my standard 10m benched with laser sight). I expect it to improve with use.
All in all, the XS120D is a cheaper alternative that comes with way more than what can be expected at this price. However, it needs a lot of work just to equal the performance of the Beeman P17, let alone HW40. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.ImageImageImage

Drilled and tapped for a M4 setscrew to lock the pressure tube pivit pin in place.Image

Hi Tom,
Thank you for the review.....
I am waiting for Canada Post to deliver mine....
Is the XS120 less noisy?
Is easier to pump(less effort)
"compared with the P17"
Thank you again!!
We will need to live with the shortcomings... or modding it
Claudio

Hi Claudio,
I find the XS120D to be equal to P17 in terms of noise/power. Both of my P17 and XS120D are shooting JSB Exact 8.44gr at 380 fps. Both are hard to cock compared to my Stoeger XP4, but as can be expected, cocking effert is directly related to power output.
My XS120D is also getting broken in on accuracy. Right now, it is doing 3/4" groups at 10m bench rested.
Thanks,
Tom

Tom,
I forgot to ask:
Are the O rings for the P17 and the XS120 the same ??
I didn't need to change mines yet but may be needed in the near future.....
Where do you get replacement O rings ?
Canadian Tire , RONA ???
Can you help me with info about the right sizes?
Thank you again,
Claudio

Hi Claudio,

I got the o-ring spec from this video on Youtube https://youtu.be/1ECdfEwrZlQ

I bought my o-rings from Amazon, you may also try your local hydraulic shops,
(#009 for breech and #117 for piston)
However, I did find the breech sometimes needs slightly thicker o-ring, so I also bought some 5mmx9mmx2mm that are slightly thicker than #009 for some guns.

Hope that helps.

God luck!

Here is a quick shootout amongst my four single pump pneumatic pistols. 10m bench rested. 5 shots per target. HW40 with 2X scope, others with laser sight.
Can't complain about the XS120D at all. It's at least equal to others in terms of power & accuracy after tuning. All for under 40 bucks with a spare .22 barrel to boot.
XP4 is the least powerful amongst the four pistols and also appeared to be the least accurate.Image

Great shooting!!!
I want to share and quote a post from 2017 from: YEP YEP

By far the best way to improve/adjust the trigger without major surgery!!!!!

Yep ~ today I turned back to play with the P17 and tried to adjust the trigger on the P 17.
Interesting that it looks the P17 has different adjustment setup on the trigger!!
I found that on my P17, the tiny screw on the trigger is for adjusting the whole travel distance ( only on travel distance on the trigger to adjust ). You turn the screw clock-wisely will shorten the stage 1 travel distance and give longer stage 2 travel distance.

So, I turn it counter clockwisely almost to the end. Then right now my trigger on the P17 has a long travel on stage 1, then you can feel the stage 2, and then pull it a very little more to break the glass and shoot ~ about 90% in stage 1 and 10% remained for stage 2.

I just did it and got a short and sweet 2nd stage in both the P17 and in the XS120.... just be careful not to go too far!!!

Good shooting everybody!!!!!!!!

Hi everybody,

I also have an update to report. The XS120D had a problem retaining air pressure when cocking. Something was causing the valve to remain open, so the air leaked out.
I took the pistol apart and finally found the issue was caused by a binding hammer linkage, in combination with a weaker valve return spring. The piece that has two parallel arms sticking out to open the valve when firing. I took it off and polished the contact surfaces and also did some metal bending to make sure the linkage did not bind. The valve return spring was hard to find a proper replacement, so I left it alone.
Right now, this issue is almost completely gone. When it does happen one out of maybe 10 times, I can always multipump the pistol in quick succession to build air pressure. As a bonus, my gritty trigger is also gone.

Hope this helps with people with similar problem.

Tom

"The piece that has two parallel arms sticking out..." That's actually called the "Hammer". One of the arms on my HW40 hammer broke after about 5 years of heavy use. I got a new one from a Canadian importer at the time and all was well. That's why I know the name of the part. I also replaced the hammer spring when it broke. All has been fine since then and my HW40 is over 21 years old.
