Being that I am not a beginner at setting up firearms, it has been six and a half decades of not using an air rifle. Our grandson's farm is being over-run with gophers, rats & squirrels so, I decided to buy a good air rifle to help him bring his rodent population under control.

I bought a Stoeger, 177 cal. air gin that came with a 4X32 ring mount scope. I have set up lots of scopes on many guns over the years: however, this Stoeger scope has me baffled, along with the trigger weight. For some reason, the windage & elevation dials on the scope works fine; then, other times nothing happens when they are turned for adjustment. I went through close t0 50 GAMO, Hollow point pellets with an attempted adjustment every five rounds. Both elevation & windage cross hairs either jumped eight or ten clicks or, did not move at all. In the end, what I discovered if the cross hairs did not move, fire a round and they would jump (sometimes).
- I would suggest dumping the Stoeger scope & buy a better quality scope. I'll give it a 3 - 10. -

The trigger? It is not a squeeze trigger, it's a grip & pull trigger. When I first started sighting in the scope, I knew the trigger was going to be a problem with a pull to the right. Scope or fixed sights, the heavy trigger would cause a problem; especially with a free standing shot. - I would give the trigger on the Stoeger airgun 5 - 10.

Eventually, I removed the scope and set up the barrel mounted glass sights. A completely different Stoeger air rifle came came to be. Once I got the barrel sights set up, I grouped 8 pellets in a one a 1" circle at 35' & 45' then 1 1/2" circle at 60'. I believe if the trigger would have been a squeeze trigger rather than a grip & pull, I could have grouped the shots even tighter.

After about another 75 GAMO Hollow point pellets at targets to work out the trigger pull compensation, I figured it was time to try the gun for the purpose it was purchased for. I headed to our Grandson's farm for some creature hunting. The first little gopher bit the dust at about 50 feet with a perfect kill head shot. The next was a very noisy red squirrel at 35'. These Gamo pellets can do a lot of damage if they hit bone before entering the skull. The pellet left an exit hole twice the size of the entry hole.

Over all, though the scope is a piece of junk and the trigger on the gun is terrible, I will give the Stoeger X20 GT air rifle a big thumbs up. A little compensation for the trigger pull with the firing, the -gun its self - is a very good small game gun.

Hey, the Stoeger x20 is the same basic rifle as a Crosman Phantom, or Quest, etc. If you search the forum for mods for Crosman Quest, Phantom, Optimus, and Benjamin Classic you will find miriad threads on how to fix the trigger issues and tune the rifle to be a formidable pest eliminator. :drinkers:
