You fire on target using the crosshair and watch for the location of the bullet splash on your reticle, then use the location of that hit on the reticle as your crosshair.

That is one method, especially when shooting across unknown winds, valley's etc. It works when you can see your bullet splash.
I used this method when shooting field rats with my HW97. Showed me exactly how to hold for the second and subsequent shots
at that mound of rats. Being able to sometimes seeing the pellet in flight was also a help.
The true sniper reticles as used on the British Sniper .338 Lapua rifles are much busier than this one, having vertical lines connecting
off the horizontal cross hair to all of the lower stadia wires in a grid.
I shot one of those at our local range. One of the lads bought one. $5,000.00 for the scope, $10,000.00 for the rifle.
