Where do I go to find out the proper size that a target should be for a given distance.
ie 20 feet target size in inches

If you know the size of your target you can use a right angle triangle calculator to find the size equivalent at any distance. You only need to provide the distance from the target and the actual target height in the same unit measurement, ie inches. That will give you the two none 90 degree angles which you can use instead of target hieght with the new distance in the second calculation.

I hope I'm making sense.

Proper size varies greatly from shooter to shooter. At 20 feet, I would be shooting at a 4mm dot (a little smaller than a .177 pellet), inside a 12mm circle. On the dot is a good shot, touching the dot so-so and missing the dot I would consider a miss. An official 10m rifle target would work ok and they give you a number of rings to gauge success.

Thanks for both replies. I don't understand how the calculation work with the target size. If my target is 8 inches by 11 inches and hung at 48 inches in height. How does that give me distance.
I understand the pythagore theorem. But not how that will give me target size.
Math is not my strongest suit.

I am not sure that I understand your question.
A question that I had to work through about target size. My question was if I had an "official" target that is meant to be shot at 10 yards, how could I scale it down to an equivalent size to shoot at 9 yards or 6 yards....
Is that your question?

Hi CountyMounty.

What I did for my targets is print them with a scale factor.

In my case I had the file for a 10m target but my basement was only 31 feet. Ten meters is 32.8 feet so I did 31/32.8 and obtained a reduction or scale down factor of 94.5%.

In your case, it would be 20/32.8 or a scaling down of about 61%.

If you have a drawing program that can scale down images, you can prepare a sheet of the reduced targets and print it after, but if you don't, just use the original 10 m target and print it at 61%.

It should work.

Yes to R-Gun Pete. Print size in relation to distance is accurate. Sorry for making it so complicated.

Hi CountyMounty.

You sent me a P.M. with a quote but no question.

Were you able to make it work?
