Hello all,
I was hoping to get some advice on targeting issues with this new M4.
I was out at Genesee range today by Edmonton with a friend. I bought this because it looks cool and was cheap.

I'm using a Browning Buckmark red dot with Crossman wad cutters that Wholesale Sports sold me. I was shooting around 10 yards with 2" groupings. But at anything further even with multiple sight adjustments, I could barely hit the target even with 10 full pumps. I couldn't hit anything from 10 yards with 5 pumps.

And, just for fun, I checked the FPS with my friend's Chrony. I was 2 feet away from it. I averaged 360fps. The best I got was 390. The box said 495 FPS.

Anyone have any advice or suggestions? Maybe a mod to the gun or maybe different pellets? It just seems a real pain to pump that much for each shot. Another note is that it was not windy at all.

Thanks,
Paul

I have an M4-177, with a Nc Star red dot.

It's a budget airgun, and I think the intent behind it is to have something to shoot soda cans with at 10m...no more, no less.

I have a great BJ Trail with decent glass, but I bought the M4177 anyways, just because I love the ergonomics of the AR platform. :D

Pumping's a pain, so the "instant gratification" factor is relatively low.

I've had really good luck with any hollow point pellet.

Plus, I'm using it to usher in a whole new generation of shooters...

Since it's designed to shoot BB as well, its probably a smooth bore. I have a 781 that others tested to be similar velocity and its accuracy at 10 yards is pretty awful, either BB or pellets.

Lots of variables when it comes to the "Air Rifle" ammo
with lots of (la-de-da) names, And weights.

So your 390 Fps result may be due to a Heavy pellet..

Pick up a few of the amo "Sample" packs and try a few types.

This will help decide what you think is best.

Lighter pellets like the "RWS Hobby Basic" Wad cutters will bring up the FPS
and is usually best for Low velocity guns.

Don't think about "BB's" for any accurate shooting.

And the riffling will be very light, as it shoots both BB's and Pellets.

Regarding the number of pumps "How many" does the book say to do.
doing any more is just for not, as the cylinder is set up to bleed it off.
(Pressure relief valve) to keep the velocity within the legal limit.

Also don't forget "Up to 495" is the operative term. (Not exact)

Even U.S. air guns rated at 1000 FPS only get 850 with crony tests.

Cool gun.. (don't hate it) give it time, and a few tests..
