First time for me reporting on a match while I'm in it. It was a messy rainy morning, lousy bus service out to Richmond from Vancouver, with my rather unhappy 7 year old son along for the day. Been suffering some tennis elbow the past couple of months. Sore today but not too bad. Oh well, tried to put any difficulty out of my head. Shot a personal best of 556/600 in training last month. This match is 3 x 60 shots, two rounds today and one tomorrow, November 3rd. This morning I managed a shakey 549/600. Will try to do better after lunch. Digging into a nice veggie burger and fries and some Stanley Park amber at the Sportstown Tavern now.

Round 2 done. Shot 539 of 600. Elbow and forearm were hurting at the start but I sort of pulled it together a bit... then my son started laughing and shrieking, distracting a lot more than just me. I got mad but could not leave the line.... so just shot angry. I think that there's a babysitter in his future first other matches. Insufficient attention span. So no upgrade from Expert for me this time around. Still, tomorrow could go better with some ice on the arm tonight and in the morning.

Can you tell me what targets you use in competition?Where can you buy them ?I would like to test myself.

Sure. I use standard 10 metre air pistol targets, the Kruger brand, but I've used Edelmann and they're great too. Both should show a clearly defined hole from any .177" pistol shooting faster than about 440fps from 10 metres. That's 10 metres from in front of your lead foot, not from the muzzle. The ISSF rules put the 10 ring at about 140cm from the level of the floor on which the shooter stands. I buy targets in blocks of 250 from Cibles, whose eBay shop is called 'Nikkonos' and their target page is here:

Pick the big targets on the right. The smaller targets are for air rifle.

Wadcutters. Domed pellets leave a very difficult-to-score hole, as do hollowpoints, Predators, or anything else besides wadcutters. You might get a clean hole in target paper from a field target pellet with a crisp leading edge, designed to catch the edges of metal targets, but I think those are more expensive than wadcutters. Anything from an RWS Diabolo Basic up to the finest $30/tin target pellets will do about the same job, with marginal differences in accuracy at 10 metres.

Complete change in the weather today, just a beautiful sunny day from the start. Yesterday I shot with wet feet (Translink service seems to get much worse in the rain), so this was a nice change. My arm was still giving me trouble but with careful pacing and working to maintain focus I managed a 550/600, bringing me to a second place Expert finish. Another medal to add to the collection!

Sadly it seems this is to be the last Hibernation match hosted by the Richmond Rod & Gun Club. With so few entrants (only 31 shooters) it doesn't seem worthwhile to the guys running the show, though we're still going to have the spring match. If we're not to lose that as well I'd suggest to anyone sitting on the fence that you get out and join the club and try your hand at competition. Otherwise we might be a region without air rifle and pistol matches! Which would be strange, considering two of Canada's top air pistol shooters live right here and an Olympian is just up the valley.

Anyway, here's my last card. Some sort of mixup at the scoring table so it's a mess, but all sorted out in the end.

Thanks guys. Yeah, the 539 was hard to take yesterday. But this game is all about consistency, especially in a 3-match competition with no final. If I'd managed to stay around 549 or 550 for all three I'd have a gold medal today, it was that close. Next time. So it's back to heavy lifting and lots of practice time, and especially follow-through training as that was my most obvious weak point. Far too many times my sights were nowhere near the bull after popping the trigger.
