I've posted a Wanted ad but I suppose some discussion wouldn't hurt. For those of us who want to get into target pistols but can't commit to a fancy PCP gun, what are the best options out there for less than $100? $200? $300? Etc. I've read the Daisy 747 is good value, and same with the Weihrauch HW40, but what if you don't even want to spend $200?

Easy - the P17 is by far the best deal for a target pistol.

For under $50 you get an over lever; single pump pneumatic based on the venerable HW40A that performs at nearly the same level of accuracy for a fraction of the cost!

Beeman P17. No target pistol, but it can outshoot beginners and most other air gunners. $60. Decent sights, Decent trigger, many have modded them with longer (better?) barrels. Not a target pistol expert by any means, but from what I have read, the 747 is a solid pistol and I doubt there would be anything much cheaper that would have "Target" or "Match" in its name. From what I can see, you won't get one of those for less than $350 Cdn all told.

Yup, it's the p17 at $50 ish, the Daisy 747 at $200, the IZH 46M at $500 and the Air Arm Alfa Sport at $750, and then the exotic stuff that I try not to look at because it gives me a fever. The Tau 7 Match at about $800 is a slightly odd option in that it's CO2, and while it's reputed to be an excellent pistol, it's a lot of money to pay for CO2 when everyone seems to have agreed that PCP is the better way to go. Another option is to get a 2240 and modify it for target use, but it's a time and money sink that will quickly run up $300 and more. The Crosman 1701 was available from scopes and ammo for a while, but looks like it is out of stock now. That's one of the cheapest pcp pistols at around $450, but the shot count per fill is a bit low.

So, below $200, you don't have a lot of choices. Buy 2 p17s and you'll have a spare (said in jest, but I may get a second some day for just that reason). The sights are the weakest link for serious target shooting, they don't adjust repeatably and they tend to shift in use.

Good to know about the P17. Shame there's nothing in the $100 range. I should also note that my shooting hand is very small by adult standards. (I cannot properly hold a Glock 17 one-handed, for example) The 747 seems to have better ergonomics than the P17, and nicer sights, too. I just missed a good deal on one for sale here on the forum so I'll have to keep my eyes out. I'm sure I'll end up with a P17 anyways for friends to use.

The P17 is 1/4 the price of the 747. Pick one up and try it. I'd be happy to sell you one for $100 if that's what it takes

Buy a 2240 ($69.99) and a lw barrel ($82.99)

And a steel breech, the Williams notch sights, and a muzzle brake with front sight...

And target grips from who knows where for $100-200.

And trigger mechanism polishing for a an approximate faux competition trigger kinda for $50

And a trigger shoe to eliminate the rough-edge feel of the stock trigger for $10-20

I have been wondering the same thing myself.

How does the Webely Alecto stand up? It has an Adjustable trigger, adjustable grip shelf, adjustable sights, and a 1~3 pump power range. It seems to me that if you want an economy target pistol, this might be the best value.

...Is the Gamo Compact still in production ? I believe Gamo also has a P45 (?) pneumatic.....I've never been able to find one in Canada, so price is a mystery..............

Interesting, I hadn't heard of the PR45 before, and I can't find it on their website, but it's listed on several UK websites.

The gamo compact seems to get very positive reviews from it's owners. I thought it was discontinued, but I see it is still on their website, although the option to buy it is not available.

I have a P45 that I got in the early 90's. I don't think they are available any longer.

50-55 shots at 440-460-ish as issued by the factory, before the t.p. , rva , and hammer stroke adjustments are even touched.
I don't fill mine to the 3 K max either- she's happiest at 2.4-2.6 K with a bit more level string, and the afore mentioned 50-55 shot count. The bell curve has a very steep climb at 3K psi...

Just kind of curious as to where the low shot count info comes from?

Mine at -8 C is still good for 46 shots...
