Would an airsoft target, like the Crosman Softair Auto Target, be strudy enough to shoot at with a 495fps air rifle? I was looking at it at CT the other day and the salesman was of no help when I asked him if it would blow apart if I tried to shoot at it with my Optimus.

Buy or build yourself a proper pellet trap with heavy gauge steel and if you want targets with them make sure they are heavy gauge steel as well. The Airsoft target you are looking there is mesh backing, meant to trap lightweight plastic bb's and prevents them from ricocheting all over the place. An airgun pellet will rip through the material.

Look into something like the Lead Pellet Trap or the Auto Reset Shooting Trap from Princess Auto. I have both and they are holding up nicely, although the steel targets on the Auto Reset are bending and dented from my .177.

You should be good, there are airsoft rifles that have the same FPS as bb/pellet rifles. In europe there are airsoft rifles that hit 650+ FPS.

There is a big difference in weight......FPS is only one factor to look at.

No. Most air soft guns are tuned UNDER 400 FPS when used in events. While only firing a 20g BB (3.09 grn ) Which is less weight than a standard steel BB.

400 FPS with a 20g BB ( 3.09 grns ) is 1 FPE, Standard 4.5mm BB is 5 grn. Shoot a 5grn the same speed its almost 2 FPE

7.9 grn pellet going 495 FPS, is 4.3 FPE. You only need 2 or 3 FPE to kill a small bird.

You'll destroy the targets quite fast ( only plastic ) and end up with holes in your wall. And the confused face of WHY? Mesh doesn't stop lead pellets or steel BB's at all. Just to let you know the power. 500 FPS 7" drozd BB gun blew a hole thru 6 layers of carpet, a thin cutting board and out the back of a plastic container.

I purchased from CT on clearance a 22LR rimfire trap... You ain't punching thru at short of 150 fpe.

And as said on the manuals, use only lead pellets, the alloy pellets will have much more penetrating power than the lead and will shorten the life of your target greatly....

And I have a question, although some airsoft guns have high muzzle speed, however what they shoot is plastic balls... Is that comparable to the steel BB and lead pellets?

Not all airsoft BBS are .20. .43 is the largest size sold here in Canada.

Yes they do but....It's not all about the FPS. But this target wouldn't be rated for his intended airgun use. Considering the targets are plastic and it's mesh.

.35g would be equivalent weight to the standard 4.5mm steel/copper BB.

Even airsoft are destroying it with standard BB's. So I wouldn't recommend shooting a pellet gun at it.

I got one to use with my WE Scar-H GBB gun and the L96 and they just shot the targets off and also destroyed it in one day. Unless you are using low quality airsoft guns from Canadian tire then its no good for you. Also you will see in the frequency of use is daily, but its just that it lasted one day or about 6 minutes.

I started at 30ft out with .20gr bbs and it worked ok. I started working toward it, shooting on auto and at 15 ft the thing just feel apart. I mean that in seconds it was just a pile of plastic.

I just read the reviews on it and it does look strong enough for your Optimus.

I shot at a piece of plastic the same thickness as the targets @ 22ft, Pellet came back and hit me in the shin. I do not recommend this for airguns and indoors. Eye protection a must.

Princess Auto would have one that safer and better. The metal one is only 20$ more, than the airsoft one. Or make some out of hinges, bolts and washers.
